2024 Baseball European Cup – Day 3 Recap

The 2024 Baseball European Cup, a World Baseball Softball Confederation Europe event, began on June 4 at Camp Municipal de Beisbol i Sofbol de València in Valencia, Spain. 

The 2024 BEC will take place from June 4 to 9 at Camp Municipal de Beisbol i Sofbol de València in Valencia, Spain. 

The Group Round will be played from June 4-7. The Semifinals and Relegation Round will be played on June 8, and the Relegation Round, bronze medal game, and gold medal game will be on June 9. 

The Astros Valencia of the Division de Honor operated from the Real Federación Española de Béisbol y Sófbol, the Deurne Spartans of Division I operated by the Koninklijke Belgische Base en Softball Federatie, the Montpellier Barracudas of Division I operated by the Fédération Française de Baseball & Softball, and the Vienna Metrostars of the Bundesliga operated from the Austrian Baseball and Softball Federation are all playing in Group A of the 2024 BEC. 

The Olimpija Karlovac of the Croatian Baseball Association, the Diving Ducks of the Bundesliga operated from the Austrian Baseball and Softball Federation, the Tenerife Marlins Puerto Cruz of the Division de Honor operated from the Real Federación Española de Béisbol y Sófbol, and the Les Cougars Montigny of Division I operated by the Fédération Française de Baseball & Softball are playing in Group B. The Croatian Baseball Association is also referred to as the Hrvatski Baseball Savez.

Thursday, June 6 

Group B – (0-3) Diving Ducks (AUT) 4, (1-1) Olimpija Karlovac (CRO) 11 

The Olimpija Karlovac beat the Diving Ducks 11-4 on the third day of the 2024 BEC in Valencia, Spain. 

The Olimpija Karlovac pitching staff between starting pitcher Carlos Eduardo Garcia Troncoso and relief pitcher Duje Papic threw nine innings and allowed five hits, three earned runs, five walks, and eight strikeouts in their first win at the 2024 BEC. 

Troncoso recorded the win and threw seven innings, allowing five hits, two earned runs, five walks, and seven strikeouts. 

The Diving Ducks pitching staff with starting pitcher Alexander Kienberger, relief pitchers Rick Van Dijck and Moritz Scheicher threw eight innings, allowing 12 hits, eight earned runs, four walks, and five strikeouts. 

The Diving Ducks defense had two errors during their third loss of the 2024 BEC on Thursday. 

Olimpija Karlovac infielder Jorman Javier Alcala Quijije smacked four hits in five at-bats and recorded two RBI on Thursday and Slobodan Gales smacked three hits in five at-bats, scoring three runs and drove in three RBI. Philip Smith went 2-for-4 with two RBI, and scored two runs on Thursday. 

Diving Ducks utility player Max Dylan Tracey had two hits in his four at-bats and scored one run. 

Diving Ducks left fielder Eoghan McGarry recorded two RBI, one hit, and one strikeout in his four at-bats. 

Diving Ducks catcher Stefan Sucharowski had one hit, two walks, and scored twice with one at-bat. 

Group B – (3-0) Tenerife Marlins Puerto Cruz (ESP) 23, (1-1) Les Cougars Montigny (FRA) 2  F/5 

The Tenerife Marlins Puerto Cruz slaughtered the Les Cougars Montigny 23-2 in five innings via mercy rule on Friday in the third day of the 2024 BEC. 

The Tenerife Marlins Puerto Cruz offense had 17 hits against the Les Cougars Montigny pitching staff. 

The Tenerife Marlins Puerto Cruz pitching staff with starting pitcher Leslie Nacar, relief pitchers Ruben Hernandez Espinosa, and Jose Montilla allowed five hits, two earned runs, two walks, and seven strikeouts. 

Les Cougars Montigny starting pitcher Antoine Rault threw two innings and allowed five hits, six earned runs, three walks, and two strikeouts. 

The Les Cougars Montigny used five pitchers out of the bullpen and with Rault allowed 23 earned runs, 11 walks, and three strikeouts during their loss on Thursday. 

The Les Cougars Montigny got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning with first baseman Yorfrank Manuel Lopez Tequedor driving an RBI single up the middle to score designated hitter Dylan Mayeux for the first run of the game. 

The next batter, catcher Gabriel Do Carmo Barros roped a double down the left field line, scoring Mayeux to extend the lead to 2-0. 

The Tenerife Marlins Puerto Cruz offense tallied five runs in the top of the second inning beginning with third baseman Leomartires Rodriguez drawing a bases loaded walk to score catcher Joel Borges to make it 2-1. 

The next batter, left fielder Yancarlo Franco lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring first baseman Richard Montiel to tie the game up at 2-2. 

Tenerife Marlins Puerto Cruz Edison Valerio launched a three home run over the right-center field fence, scoring Luis Rodriguez and Leomartires Rodriguez to capture a 5-2 lead. 

The Marlins offense pounded out 11 runs in the top of the third inning and did not look back the rest of the way. Ricardo Mendoza had a two-run home run in the top of the third inning to cap the inning. 

Lesther Galavan ended the day with two home runs in the top of the fourth inning with a three-run home run over the left field wall and in the top of the fifth inning with another three-run home run over the center field wall. 

Galvan ended the day with seven RBI with two walks and scoring four runs in his three at-bats. 

Valerio had three hits, two RBI, two walks, and scored four runs in his three at-bats. 

Luis Rodriguez led the day for the Marlins offense with four hits and scored two runs, drove in three RBI in his four at-bats. 

The Marlins offense has proudced 45 runs in the first-two games at the 2024 BEC.

Group A – (2-0) Astros Valencia (ESP) 19, (0-2) Deurne Spartans (BEL) 4  F/5 

The Astros Valencia beat the Deurne Spartans 19-4 in five inning mercy rule on Thursday at the 2024 BEC. 

The Astros Valencia offense had 19 hits on Thursday. 

The Astros Valencia pitching staff between starting pitcher Jorge Balboa, relief pitchers Engelbert Alvarez, and Roibert Decena allowed seven hits, four earned runs, two walks, and four strikeouts. 

Decena played defensively in center field before coming into pitch on Thursday night. 

The Deurne Spartans with starting pitcher Jose Luis Larrinaga Ocampo, relief pitchers Eder Hernandez Sarao, Sam Ruijter, and Steff Roymans threw five innings, allowing 19 earned runs, seven walks, and four strikeouts. 

Astros Valencia catcher Blake Ochoa launched a two-run home run over the right field wall in the top of the first inning, scoring Decena to punctuate the four-run inning. 

Astros Valencia utility player Tanner Donnels rocked a two-run home run over the center field wall in the top of the second inning, scoring shortstop Edgar Rondon to extend the lead to 6-0. 

The Astros Valencia offense pounded nine runs in the top of the third inning on Thursday. 

Ochoa finished the day with three hits, four RBI, two walks, and scored four runs in his three at-bats. 

Rondon smacked two hits, two RBI, one walk, and scored three runs during his four at-bats on Thursday. 

Donnels had two hits, three RBI, one strikeout, and one scored in his five at-bats. 

Astros Valencia second baseman Emmanuel Febles had a two-run home run over the left field wall in the top of the third inning and ended the day with four hits, two RBI, and scored three runs in his five at-bats. 

Michael Rodriguez smacked two hits in his three at-bats and had one RBI, one walk, one strikeout, and scored once on Thursday. 

Astros Valencia designated hitter Alex Alfonso in his four at-bats had two hits, two RBI, one strikeout, and scored one run in Thursday’s win.
