The MLB trade deadline is always full of shocking moves, and this year was no different. What many assumed to be a boring deadline turned into one of the most action-packed in recent memory. One of the major reasons was the quality of international players moved this year. Here are some of the most impactful trades made leading up to yesterday’s trade deadline.
Athletics trade Mason Miller and J.P. Sears to Padres for Leo De Vries (MLB No. 3), Braden Nett (Padres’ No. 3), Henry Baez (Padres No. 13) and Eduarnial Nunez (Padres’ No. 17)
Perhaps the most shocking trade of the day, the San Diego Padres added Mason Miller, who is under contract for four more seasons. The deal cost them one of the best prospects in all of baseball, Leo De Vries, who now joins a young core in the Athletics’ organization.

Minnesota Twins trade trade Jhoan Durán to Phillies for Eduardo Tait (MLB No. 56) and Mick Abel (MLB No. 92)
The Phillies lost Jose Alvarado to a PED suspension earlier in the year. With him out for the postseason, they filled their need at closer with an absolute force in Jhoan Durán. The National League East race may come down to the wire, and the Phillies now have a closer.
Arizona Diamondbacks trade Eugenio Suarez* to Seattle Mariners for Tyler Locklear (Mariners’ No. 9), Hunter Cranton (Mariners’ No. 16) and Juan Burgos (Mariners’ No. 17)
Suárez was the best bat available at the deadline. The Mariners added both big bats from the Diamondbacks and suddenly have some offense as they try to win the division and make the postseason.

Diamondbacks trade Josh Naylor to the Mariners for Brandyn Garcia (Mariners’ No. 13) and Ashton Izzi (Mariners No. 16)
This move was the first of two that signaled the Mariners’ intention to go all in. Naylor and Suárez are both set to be free agents after the year, and the team gave up a total of five Top 30 prospects.
Baltimore Orioles trade Ramón Urías and cash considerations to the Houston Astros for Twine Palmer
The Orioles did not make a fire sale of all their stars. However, Urías will help fill the void left by Isaac Paredes’ injury in Houston.
Orioles trade Gregory Soto to the New York Mets for Wellington Aracena (Mets’ No. 19) and Cameron Foster
The Mets added a much-needed southpaw to their bullpen. Decimated by injuries, the Mets get a two-time All-Star in Soto, who was just the first of the bullpen pieces the Mets added.
Orioles trade Seranthony Domínguez and cash to the Toronto Blue Jays for Juaron Watts-Brown (Blue Jays’ No. 10)
Perhaps the strangest trade of the week, the Blue Jays acquired Domínguez between a doubleheader against his former team. He then pitched in Game 2 against the Orioles.
San Francisco Giants trade Tyler Rogers to the New York Mets for José Buttó, Blade Tidwell (Mets’ No. 10), and Drew Gilbert (Mets’ No. 12)
Tidwell already made his debut, but the significant part of the deal is that Rogers is a rental and the move signaled the Giants’ intention to be sellers. Rogers is one of three big-name relievers the Mets added.
St. Louis Cardinals trade Ryan Helsley to the New York Mets for Jesus Baez (Mets’ No. 8), Nate Dohm (Mets’ No. 14) and Frank Elissalt
After adding Helsley, the Mets essentially have two All-Star-caliber closers. The Mets now have Rogers, Helsley, and Edwin Díaz at the end of games—quite an answer to the Phillies adding Durán.
Orioles trade Cedric Mullins to the Mets for Anthony Nunez (Mets’ No. 14), Raimon Gomez (Mets’ No. 30), and right-hander Chandler Marsh
The Mets demonstrated their desire to win this season with all of their moves. Mullins solves their outfield crisis. He is just a rental, but the Mets know they could lose Pete Alonso in free agency, so adding Mullins helps them go for it all now.
Atlanta Braves trade Rafael Montero to the Detroit Tigers for Jim Jarvis
Montero is a World Series champion and has experience pitching in leverage spots. He is not having his best season, but the Tigers see something in him and hope he can help their bullpen down the stretch.
Kansas City Royals trade Freddy Fermin to the Padres for Ryan Bergert (Padres’ No. 7 prospect) and Stephen Kolek
The Padres needed a catcher, and they got a solid one. Fermin can give the team quality at-bats and build up to a bigger workload as the team heads into October. He is not a superstar, but looks to be an upgrade. He is also under team control through 2029.
Orioles trade Ryan O’Hearn and Ramon Laureano to the Padres for Boston Bateman (Padres’ No. 4), Cobb Hightower (Padres’ No. 6), Tyson Neighbors (Padres’ No. 12), Victor Figueroa (Padres’ No. 29), Brandon Butterworth, and Tanner Smith
The Padres turned six players from their 2024 draft class into O’Hearn and Laureano. If the Miller trade did not make it clear, the Padres want to win now. Laureano is having a great year and has a team option for next year. He solves the outfield crisis in San Diego. O’Hearn was an All-Star this year and is a rental, bringing more power to the lineup.
Twins trade Carlos Correa and cash to the Astros for Matt Mikulski
This trade was not anticipated by many before the last few days. Correa goes back to Houston, waiving his no-trade clause to return. He may play third base this time and is under contract through 2027.
Twins trade Willi Castro to the Chicago Cubs for Ryan Gallagher (Cubs’ No. 8) and Sam Armstrong
The Cubs blew a 6 1/2–game lead in the NL Central. Adding Castro gives them a versatile player to plug into their lineup and get their offense back on track. Castro could have been a great fit for the team the Cubs now chase, the Milwaukee Brewers, but Chicago is gearing up for a tight race in the next couple of months.
Miami Marlins trade Jesús Sánchez to the Astros for Ryan Gusto, Chase Jaworsky (Astros’ No. 13), and Esmil Valencia
The Astros added a left-handed bat, which they needed. Yordan Alvarez had been the only consistent left-handed hitter, and he is injured. Sánchez gives the team a reliable bat to use as DH or in the outfield.
Twins trade Danny Coulombe to the Texas Rangers for Garrett Horn
This was a sneaky good move for the Rangers. They added a reliable left-handed reliever to their bullpen as they push for the postseason, without giving up much.
Milwaukee Brewers trade Nestor Cortes and Jorge Quintana to the Padres for Brandon Lockridge
The team with the best record in baseball was mostly quiet at the deadline. This move supposedly solved their rotation logjam by dealing Cortes for outfield depth. This likely signals that Jackson Chourio’s injury could sideline him, and the club wants to keep Christian Yelich primarily at DH.
Giants trade Camilo Doval to the Yankees for Trystan Vrieling (Yankees’ No. 19), Jesus Rodriguez(Yankees’ No. 25), Parks Harber, and Carlos De La Rosa
The Yankees completely overhauled their bullpen in a span of a few hours. Doval has multiple years of control and was an All-Star in 2023. He was not even the only closer the team added, giving the Yankees an elite bullpen.
Pittsburgh Pirates trade David Bednar to the Yankees for Rafael Flores (Yankees’ No. 8), Edgleen Perez (Yankees’ No. 14), and Brian Sanchez
Bednar is under club control through next season. He, Doval, Luke Weaver, and Devin Williams form a formidable late-game bullpen. Williams has not been the player the Yankees hoped for and could lose the closer’s role soon. With Doval and Bednar now on the squad, the Yankees can let Williams walk with replacements ready.

Tampa Bay Rays trade José Caballero to the Yankees for Everson Pereira and a player to be named later or cash
The Yankees added infield depth with serious speed. Yankee GM Brian Cashman insisted this move was not related to Anthony Volpe’s struggles. Caballero is a versatile defender with strong speed stats and leads the league in stolen bases.
Twins trade Griffin Jax to the Rays for Taj Bradley
Jax had a great season last year. His numbers this year are less impressive, but underlying metrics show he has pitched better than his ERA. The Rays have a reputation for developing pitchers, and now they have a talented, controllable reliever in Jax. Bradley is high-upside with club control and will try to establish himself on the Twins.
Twins trade Louis Varland and Ty France to the Blue Jays for Alan Roden and Kendry Rojas (Blue Jays’ No. 5)
A two-for-two swap at the buzzer is exactly the kind of drama that makes the trade deadline great. The Twins completed a fire sale, and the Blue Jays added two pieces to help their division race.
