ARLINGTON, Texas- The college baseball season kicked off Friday, Feb. 14. Here are the takeaways from the first slate of games in Arlington, Texas for the Shriners Children’s College Showdown.
Game One: Clemson Tigers 6, Oklahoma State Cowboys 5
- Oklahoma State starting pitcher Gabe Davis had a great start (4.1 IP, 6 K)
- Cam Cannarella struggled (0-4), but Clemson’s lineup had six different batters get hits
- Lucas Mahlstedt with a sturdy two-inning save for Clemson (15 strikes in 20 total pitches)
Game Two: Ole Miss Rebels 2, Arizona Wildcats 1
- Ole Miss hitters Luke Hill and Issac Humphrey went a combined 4-6 and had two combined RBIs, leading the offense in the win
- Hunter Elliott had a great start for the Rebels after being plagued with injuries for nearly two seasons (5.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 3 K)
- Five Arizona players went hitless in the game and combined for 0-14; Ole Miss pitching was excellent all game
Game Three: Louisville Cardinals 4, Texas Longhorns 3 (10 inn.)
- Both starting pitchers had great days
- Texas: Jared Spencer (5.2 IP, 6 K, 1 BB, 0 ER)
- Louisville: Patrick Forbes (5.0 IP, 11 K, 1 BB, 2 ER)
- Louisville’s big-name players, Zion Rose and Matt Klein, led the way with hitting, combining with four hits
- The Longhorns’ large number of strikeouts and inability to pull away with only a 2-0 lead caused them to lose in walk-off fashion
