2026 Caribbean Series: How the MLB Prospects and Contracted Players Fared In Jalisco

ZAPOPAN, Mexico – The 2026 Caribbean Series is now committed to history, but the start of Major League Baseball’s spring training is right around the corner.

In total, 17 players at the Caribbean Series have signed minor league or MLB contracts for the 2025 season and will soon be reporting to camps across Florida and Arizona. Here’s how each of them fared in Jalisco last week.

Arizona Diamondbacks

Pedro Catuy, OF, Federales de Chiriqui – Catuy appeared in Panama’s first three games, mostly seeing time in right field as a defensive replacement. He entered Panama’s opener, an 11-2 loss to the Charros de Jalisco on Feb. 2, in the eighth inning as a pinch hitter and flew out to left field in his only at-bat in the 2026 Caribbean Series.

Athletics

Joey Meneses, IF, Tomateros de Culiacan – Meneses went 4-for-20, playing in the first five games before the Athletics, with whom he signed a minor league deal in November, told him not to play in the championship game. He had two RBIs for the Tomateros.

Atlanta Braves

Blane Abeyta, RP, Cangrejeros de Santurce – Abeyta threw a scoreless inning, striking out the side in the eighth in the Cangrejeros round robin game against the Leones del Escogido on Feb. 2. He allowed one run on one hit in an inning of work against Panama on Feb. 5.

Boston Red Sox

Eduardo Rivera, SP, Cangrejeros de Santurce – Rivera started the Cangrejeros games against the Charros de Jalisco, throwing 3 2/3 innings and allowing two runs, one of them earned, on five hits and four walks, taking the loss.

Chicago Cubs

Christian Bethancourt, C, Federales de Chiriqui – Bethancourt, who has appeared in 427 Major League games in his career, went 5-for-17 with four RBIs and played 27 innings behind the plate with one passed ball.

Chicago White Sox

Ryan Burrowes, IF, Federales de Chiriqui – Burrowes appeared in three games, going 1-for-5 and scored a run. His lone hit and his run scored came against the Tomateros de Culiacan on Feb. 2.

Cincinnati Reds

Ichiro Cano, IF, Tomateros de Culiacan – Cano went 0-for-1, appearing in one round robin game against the Charros de Jalisco and striking out in his only plate appearance.

New York Mets

Jose Ramos, OF, Federales de Chiriqui – Ramos played all four games for the Federales in center field, where he had eight putouts and an assist in nine total chances. At the plate, he had 19 at-bats and recorded three singles, a triple, and a homer. The homer came in the 16-15 loss to the Dominican Republic off Travis Lakins.

Jefry Yan, RP, Leones del Escogido – Yan was the first called from the bullpen for Ramon Santiago when he needed a clutch out. His exuberant celebrations after recording strikeouts and escaping jams made him a favorite of Dominican fans and abhorred by fans of, well, everyone else. He threw scoreless innings against the Charros de Jalisco and Cangrejeros de Santurce in the round robin, but allowed a run one one hit and a walk in one inning of work in the semifinal against the Tomateros de Culiacan. You can see video of his style of celebration in the tweet below. Turn up the volume to get the full effect.

Philadelphia Phillies

Andrew Baker, RP, Cangrejeros de Santurce – Baker allowed one run on one hit and two walks and struck out three in two innings of work against the Leones del Escogido on Feb. 2. He threw 1 2/3 scoreless, hitless innings, allowing a walk, striking out four against the Federales de Chiriqui on Feb. 5.

San Diego Padres

Luis Verdugo, IF, Tomateros de Culiacan – Verdugo was a steady bat for Lorenzo Bundy’s Tomateros, going 8-for-21 in five games. He had two doubles, scored five runs, and had five RBIs.

San Francisco Giants

Adrian Sugastey, C, Federales de Chiriqui – Sugastey caught Panama’s game against the Tomateros de Culiacan, allowing one stolen base. At the plate, he went 1-for-1 with a run scored against the Charros de Jalisco, hitting a triple in the ninth inning off Trevor Clifton, an elite closer in Mexico’s two leagues and scoring a run. He went 0-for-3 against the Tomateros de Culiacan.

St. Louis Cardinals

Nelson Velazquez, IF/OF, Cangrejeros de Santurce – Velazquez played all five games for Puerto Rico, going 8-for-23 with an RBI with three strikeouts.

Bligh Madris, OF, Charros de Jalisco – Madris, known as “Mr. TNT” in Jalisco, showed off his explosive power with the bat in Jalisco, clubbing three homers, each of which went 400-plus feet. He drove in a total of eight runs, scored five, and went 4-for-23, drawing three walks and striking out five times.

Seattle Mariners

Abdiel Jose Mendoza, RHP, Federales de Chiriqui – Mendoza made two appearances, both in relief. Against the Tomateros de Culiacan on Feb. 3, he allowed three hits in one inning of work, but escaped without allowing a run. Against the Cangrejeros de Santurce on Feb. 5, he allowed three runs, two of them earned, on four hits and a walk.

Texas Rangers

Andrew Velazquez, IF, Cangrejeros de Santurce – The Fordham Prep product made three appearances in the round robin and went 0-for-6.

Washington Nationals

Yohandy Morales, IF, Cangrejeros de Santurce – Morales had the best series of Puerto Rico’s batters, going 11-for-22 with six runs scored, a double, a triple, two homers, and four RBIs. He went 4-for-5 with a solo homer in Santurce’s semifinal loss to the Charros de Jalisco.
