The Serie de Las Americas tournament began last Thursday in Venezuela at Estadio Monumental Simon Bolivar in Caracas and Estadio Forum in La Guaira.

This year’s participants are the Caimanes de Barranquilla of the Liga Profesional De Béisbol Colombia, Club DAOM of the Liga Argentina de Béisbol, Leones de Leon of the Asociación Profesional de BéisbolNicaraguense, the Aguilas Metropolitanas of Panama ProBeis, Cuba’s national team, and the Willemstad Cannons of the Kampionato Beisbòl Profeshonal Kòrsou.

Below are Wednesday’s results from the three games played, and the remaining schedule for the tournament. The third-place game and the championship game will be held on Saturday, Feb. 13.

Argentina 10, Panama 6 – Without a doubt, Argentina’s comeback victory against Panama on Wednesday is the upset of the tournament thus far. Panama entered the contest with a perfect 5-0 record and broke through for three runs in the top of the first, highlighted by David Rodriguez’s two-run home run.

Argentina, 1-4 before yesterday’s win and trailing 6-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh, plated five in the frame. The most impactful swing of the game came off the bat of Danyer Sanabria, who launched a grand slam in the seventh to give Argentina a 7-6 lead and contribute to the four-run win.

Cuba 8, Colombia 7 – Thirty-nine-year-old Alfredo Despaigne went deep for Cuba and had a team-high three RBIs as his team narrowly edged Colombia. Harold Vazquez’s two-run homer extended Cuba’s lead to 5-1 in the fourth, but a three-run shot from Colombia’s Carlos Martinez cut the deficit to 7-5 in the bottom of the sixth.

Outfielder Roel Santos lifted a sacrifice fly in the eighth to add an insurance run for Cuba, who held on for the victory despite a two-run rally by Colombia in the ninth. Yankiel Mauris threw 1 ⅔ crucial scoreless relief innings for Cuba, striking out two.

Venezuela 12, Curaçao, 4 – Ten of Venezuela’s 12 runs were scored between the second and fourth innings. Wilfredo Tovar’s two-run double opened the scoring in the top of the second.

Curaçao plated three in the bottom half of the second but was held to just one run the rest of the way. Relievers Luis Martinez, Felix Cepeda, and Ronnie Williams combined to allow just four hits across four innings for Venezuela. Former Major League Baseball third baseman Renato Nunez went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBIs for Venezuela.
