The Serie de Las Americas tournament began last Thursday in Venezuela at Estadio Monumental Simon Bolivar in Caracas and Estadio Forum in La Guaira.
This year’s participants are the Caimanes de Barranquilla of the Liga Profesional De Béisbol Colombia, Club DAOM of the Liga Argentina de Béisbol, Leones de Leon of the Asociación Profesional de BéisbolNicaraguense, the Aguilas Metropolitanas of Panama ProBeis, Cuba’s national team, and the Willemstad Cannons of the Kampionato Beisbòl Profeshonal Kòrsou.
Below are Sunday’s results from the three games played, and the remaining schedule for the tournament. The third-place game and championship game will occur Saturday, Feb. 13.
Colombia 12, Curacao 0 – In control from start to finish, Colombia utilized a four-run eighth inning to mercy-rule Curacao in eight innings. Catcher Andres Angulo launched a two-run home run in the second, and former Major Leaguer Harold Ramirez contributed a three-run shot in the third to give Colombia an early 5-0 lead.
Gabriel Lino had two roundtrippers of his own – a solo shot in the seventh and a grand slam in the eighth, finishing the day with a game-high six RBIs. Starting pitcher Luis Perez was dominant on the mound, striking out seven across seven scoreless frames. Curacao’s lineup managed just three hits in the contest.
Cuba 10, Argentina 0 – Cuba had similar success against Argentina’s pitching staff as Colombia had against Curacao’s. They were held scoreless through the first four innings by starter Carlos Parra, but Roel Santos’ two-run shot in the bottom of the fifth opened the floodgates.
Outfielder Yasiel Gonzalez hit his second homer of the tournament in the seventh, a three-run shot as a part of Cuba’s six-run frame to contribute to the eight-inning mercy rule. Julian Predrouzo recorded Argentina’s only base knock of the game as right-hander Randy Cueto threw nearly eight perfect innings for Cuba, striking out six in the process.
Venezuela 7, Nicaragua 2 – Hernan Perez’s two-run dinger in the top of the first inning set the stage for a commanding win by Venezuela. First baseman Aldrem Corredor followed Perez’s moonshot with his own two-run homer in the second, and Venezuela led 7-0 after three innings.
Nicaragua plated a run in each of the second and fourth innings, but the deficit they faced was insurmountable. Former six-year MLB veteran Esmil Rogers held Nicaragua to those two runs over 4 ⅓ frames, and five of Venezuela’s relievers (Yorvin Pantoja, Edwar Colina, Raffi Vizcaino, Silvino Bracho, Felipe Rivero) combined to give up just four hits and walk none over the final 4 ⅔ innings.
