2026 World Baseball Classic: Israel, Canada Get Wins On Sunday; Great Britain and Brazil Face Off to Avoid Relegation Monday

Sunday’s Results

Japan (2-0) Australia (2-0) – Australia came close to a historic upset, shutting down Japan’s potent offense into the seventh inning while maintaining a 1-0 lead. But Japan escaped with a 4-3 victory over Australia in front of 42,331 fans — and Japan’s Imperial Family — at the Tokyo Dome on Sunday night, improving to 3-0 in Pool C play at the World Baseball Classic.

Cuba (2-0) 7, Colombia (0-3) 4 – Cuba scored four runs and the first inning on a three-run homer from Ariel Martinez and a solo shot from Erisbel Arruebarrena and scored three more in the sixth, winning behind strong work from the bullpen. Cuba used eight pitchers, none going more than two innings, with Raidel Martinez earning the save.

Dominican Republic (1-0) 12, The Netherlands (1-1) 1 – The Dominican Republic lineup truly was a new Murderer’s Row, getting four homers from four different batters in a 12-1, seven-inning win over the Netherlands to improve to 2-0 in Pool D, pushing themselves one win closer to a pool-deciding showdown against Venezuela on Tuesday night and all but ensuring they’ll advance to the quarterfinals.

Israel (0-1) 5, Nicaragua (0-2) 0 – Israel topped Nicaragua 5-0 behind a four-run fifth inning, improving to 1-2 in Pool D at the 2026 World Baseball Classic and likely avoiding having to qualify for the next WBC, while Nicaragua will likely be headed to the World Baseball Classic Qualifier.

Mexico (2-0) 16, Brazil (0-3) 0 – Mexico erupted for 16 runs on 16 hits and mercy-ruled Brazil 16–0 in six innings Sunday night at Daikin Park, improving to 2–0 in Pool B of the 2026 World Baseball Classic.

Monday’s Schedule

6 a.m. EDT – South Korea (1-2) vs. Australia (2-1) – Tokyo Dome – TV: FS1 – Lachlan Wells gets the nod for Australia, which can advance to the quarterfinals in Miami with a win, while South Korea could create a three-way tie for the second spot in Pool C with a win. Son Ju Young will start for South Korea, which could still be relegated to the qualifier if they lose to Australia and Czechia beats Japan.

Noon EDT – Dominican Republic (2-0) vs. Israel (1-1) – loanDepot Park – TV: FS1 – A D.R. win would assure they advance out of Pool D to a quarterfinal, where they would face either Japan should they finish second in Pool D or the Pool C runner-up if they finish atop the five teams in Miami.

Noon EDT – Colombia (0-3) vs. Panama (1-2) – Hiram Bithorn Stadium – TV: FS2 – A loss by Columbia would relegate them to the World Baseball Classic qualifier, a shocking outcome for a country that beat semifinalist Mexico during pool play at the 2023 WBC. Panama can put themselves in the hunt to advance via a tiebreaker with a win. Adrian Almeida starts for Colombia against Paolo Espino for Panama.

1 p.m. EDT – Brazil (0-3) vs. Great Britain (0-3) – Daikin Park – TV: Tubi – Brazil and Great Britain will battle it out to stave off relegation. The winner will stay in the field for the next World Baseball Classic, while the loser will have to run the gauntlet of qualifying before the next WBC. Neither team has announced a starter.

7 p.m. EDT – Cuba (2-0) vs. Puerto Rico (2-0) – Hiram Bithorn Stadium – TV: FS1 – Elmer Rodriguez will start for Puerto Rico, which could improve to 3-0 and all but assure they advance to the quarterfinals, while Cuba has yet to name a starter. A win by either team would ensure they advance to the quarterfinals at Daikin Park in Houston.

7 p.m. EDT – Venezuela (2-0) vs. Nicaragua (0-3) – loanDepot Park – TV: FS2 – Yoendrys Gomez will start for Venezuela, which can all but assure a trip to the quarterfinals with a win. Dusty Baker will open with Danilo Bermudez for Nicaragua, which needs a win to try to avoid heading to the World Baseball Classic Qualifier for the second time in as many tournaments.

8 p.m. EDT – Mexico (1-0) vs. United States (2-0) – Daikin Park – TV: FOX – Paul Skenes will start against Mexico as the two favorites to advance out of this pool go head-to-head in what should be a raucous atmosphere, while former Major Leaguer Manny Barreda, an elite starter in Mexico’s two professional leagues, will take the mound for Benji Gil.
