Excitement is breaking tonight as the eight qualifying teams have been announced, looking to punch their ticket into the 2026 World Baseball Classic. Only four teams will advance into the competition, as the eight teams are split into two divisions of four teams. Let’s break down both pools:
The first pool of teams will play in Taipei, Taiwan, from February 19-26, 2025. The teams competing in this pool will be Chinese Taipei, Spain, Nicaragua, and South Africa. Both Spain and South Africa did not qualify in 2023 as they will look to secure their way into the tournament. Spain last appeared in the World Baseball Classic in 2013, while South Africa has not appeared since 2009. As for Chinese Taipei, they did not play well enough to secure their spot for 2026, which is why they will have to re-qualify. Nicaragua appeared in their first WBC tournament in 2023 without recording a victory.
The second pool will be held in Tucson, Arizona, from February 28 to March 7, 2025. Two teams that will have the requalify from the 2023 Classic are Colombia and China. The other two teams joining them in this pool will be Brazil and Germany. Brazil last appeared in the WBC in 2013, while Germany has yet to appear in a WBC, losing in all qualifiers.
The first teams in each of the two pools will automatically head directly to the 2026 WBC, while the second and third teams will compete for the final two spots in the Classic. In just five short months, the World Baseball Classic Qualifiers will be underway as each country looks to earn its bid in the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
