Yosvany Alarcón, catcher for Leñadores de Las Tunas, celebrates during the 2023 Serie Nacional Final against Industriales at Estadio Julio Antonio Mella in Cuba.

Cardenales de Lara first baseman Rangel Ravelo was the only Cuban-born player to participate in the 2025 Caribbean Series at El Nido de los Águilas in Mexicali, Mexico. The other 79 Cuban players did not appear as reinforcements or on the active rosters of any of the five teams competing in the tournament.

Ravelo hit .250/.294/.250 in 16 at-bats, playing four games during the preliminary roundc. He recorded four hits, three runs, two RBIs, one walk, and one strikeout while helping Cardenales de Lara finish second in pool play with a 2-2 record. They tied with the No. 3 seed, 2024-25 LIDOM champion Leones del Escogido, and the No. 4 seed, 2024-25 Liga de Béisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente champion Indios de Mayagüez, advancing based on the Team Quality Balance run differential rule.

Cardenales de Lara lost the third-place game to Indios de Mayagüez, 7-4, on Feb. 6 in Mexicali.

World Baseball Network has compiled a ledger of Cuban-born players who competed in the 2024-25 winter league season. On Feb. 7, Yusseff Díaz of Pelota Cubana USA reported that Cuban players seeking to re-enter the 2025 Elite League, which begins in March, must possess a valid Cuban passport or ID card, with repatriation no longer required if the player has an active Cuban passport. They must also be eligible to re-enter the Cuban sports system, meaning they cannot have abandoned a Cuban delegation during an international competition or have disciplinary infractions on their record, as determined by the national commission. Additionally, players must have completed any required sanctions if they were previously disciplined.

The Instituto Nacional de Deportes, Educación Física y Recreación (INDER) oversees the Federación Cubana de Béisbol y Softbol (FCBS) and regulates player eligibility for participation in the Serie Nacional and the Elite League.

Cuba has not hosted foreign players in domestic leagues since the dissolution of its privately operated Cuban League, which ran from 1878 to 1961. The league was abolished following the implementation of the United States trade embargo under Fidel Castro, which resulted in the elimination of professional sports on the island.

The interpretation detailing the structure of the 2025 Elite League regular season may be found on the Giovanni Palco 211 Facebook Page.
