Lawlar is Arizona’s top-ranked prospect in the organization’s MLBPipeline Top 30.
The Diamondbacks (21-20) will open their series against the Giants (24-17) on Monday, May 12, with first pitch scheduled for 9:45 p.m. EDT at Oracle Park.
As of Monday morning, the Diamondbacks had not announced a corresponding roster move, according to the team’s official transactions page.
Lawlar, a 22-year-old right-handed hitter from Carrollton, Texas, was selected sixth overall in the 2021 Major League Baseball Draft. He made his MLB debut with Arizona on September 7, 2023.
In his first stint in the majors, Lawlar appeared in 14 games, hitting .129/.206/.129 in 34 plate appearances. He collected four hits, one stolen base, two walks, and struck out 11 times.
Lawlar missed 8 to 10 weeks last season after undergoing thumb surgery. He was placed on the 60-day injured list on March 28, 2024, after rupturing the ulnar collateral ligament in his thumb while attempting to pick up a ball during a spring training game.
He was activated from the injured list on June 11 and played across three levels to finish the year: the Arizona Complex League, Double-A Amarillo, and Triple-A Reno.
Across those 23 games in 2024, Lawlar batted .318/.418/.482 over 104 plate appearances, collecting 27 hits, six doubles, one triple, two home runs, 20 RBI, six stolen bases, 14 walks, and 23 strikeouts.
Following the season, he played winter ball in the Dominican Republic with Tigres del Licey of LIDOM, appearing in 27 games and hitting .237/.315/.355 over 108 plate appearances. He tallied 22 hits, two doubles, three home runs, 14 RBI, nine stolen bases, nine walks, and 32 strikeouts.
During 2025 Cactus League play, Lawlar hit .294/.368/.529 over 13 games, recording 10 hits in 34 at-bats with three doubles, one triple, one home run, four RBI, two stolen bases, four walks, and eight strikeouts before being optioned to Triple-A Reno on March 19.
To begin the 2025 season, Lawlar appeared in 37 games with Reno, hitting .336/.413/.579 with 51 hits in 173 plate appearances. He logged 15 doubles, two triples, six home runs, 31 RBI, 13 stolen bases, 18 walks, and 39 strikeouts.
Defensively, Lawlar has started 17 games at second base, eight at third base, and 10 at shortstop for Reno this season.
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo will evaluate how Lawlar fits into the infield rotation moving forward, with Garrett Hampson and Tim Tawa currently serving as the team’s primary backup options.
