The Auburn Tigers hosted the LSU Tigers this weekend at home in Plainsman Park. They secured a series win with a 4-2 victory on Saturday and then an 8-4 win on Friday.
These wins moved Auburn to 25-10 overall and well above .500 in SEC play. The Tigers have been playing great baseball as of late. Prior to this LSU series, they had a midweek win over a good Georgia Tech team in Atlanta and won last weekend’s series against their rival, the Alabama Crimson Tide.
They have won five of their last six games heading into Sunday’s series finale against LSU.
An impressive part of Auburn’s wins this weekend has been how quiet they have kept the LSU offense. Head coach Jay Johnson’s team was in the top ten in the country in total runs this season. However, they have been held to just six in two games.
This comes down to great pitching and great starts by Sam Dutton and Cade Fisher. On Friday, Dutton went six innings, struck out seven LSU hitters, and allowed no earned runs. On Saturday, Fischer went five innings, struck out six batters, and allowed just one earned run.
With pitching like this, Auburn can make life for lots of SEC lineups difficult. With teams like Texas and Tennessee still on the schedule, this will be something they need to continue to harness as they make a push for a national seed.
