Ole Miss took home the Governor’s Cup in an 8-7 win over their arch-rival, Mississippi State, in Pearl, Miss.
The key moment in Tuesday’s win for the Rebels came from Austin Fawley, who hit a two-run homer to tie the game and eventually sent it into extra innings.
This play, in arguably Ole Miss’ biggest game of the year, has summed up the value that Fawley has had for the team in recent weeks.
Dating back to the Rebels’ game against Tennessee on April 11, Fawley has one hit in every game except one. In that specific game against Tennessee, he had two hits, including a homer, and two RBI.
He had two hits in the next game as well. The sophomore from West Palm Beach, Fla., ended up recording a hit in every game that series.
That hot hitting continued the next weekend when the Rebels travelled to Columbia to take on the South Carolina Gamecocks.
Fawley homered in the first game of that series on April 17. This continued a home run streak that lasted four games, which included all three games against Tennessee.
During the series finale against South Carolina, Fawley had a two-hit performance that included four RBI. He hit a home run in that game as well.
As it stands, Fawley is having his sophomore breakout season in Oxford. He is batting .260 with 12 home runs, 35 RBI, and has an on-base percentage at .395. Ole Miss has benefited from the great play he has shown throughout this season.
Up Next – The Ole Miss Rebels will travel to Nashville this weekend to take on the Vanderbilt Commodores at Hawkins Field. The series is from April 25-27.
The first pitch for the game on Friday, April 25, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. EDT.
