Bahamian Sebastian Walcott Dominating Minor Leagues

Bahamian Sebastian Walcott is the number 35 prospect in all of baseball and the top prospect in the Texas Rangers farm system. The 18-year-old shortstop/third baseman was called up to Double-A for the Frisco RoughRiders on September 10. Since then, he has been red hot at the plate.

Walcott has played five games in Frisco so far. In those five games, he has DH’d twice, played shortstop twice, and played one game at third. The appeal to Walcott is his talented hitting ability more so than his defense, as his offensive production has made him a premier prospect. Walcott possesses a great power tool in his bat and has had great OPS production through two years in the MiLB.

Walcott has hit to an exciting .984 OPS in Frisco since being called up less than a week ago. He has eight hits in 24 at-bats, three doubles, seven RBIs, and a home run. He is a high-contact player and so has only walked once thus far. It remains to be seen if he can keep up this production in Double-A, but it has been a great start.

Walcott was signed by the Texas Rangers from Nassau, Bahamas, in the 2023 International class for a whopping 3.2 million dollar signing bonus. He played 35 games in Rookie ball after the Dominican Summer League and hit a .849 OPS in 143 at-bats. That led him to be promoted to the Rangers High-A affiliate Hickory Crawdads of the South Atlantic League in late 2023. He remained in Hickory to start the 2024 season and played 116 games for them before being called up to Double-A.

The Bahamas are hosting the 2024 Caribbean Baseball Cup in October. If the Rangers allow Walcott to compete, he could be a strong addition to the national squad.
