The Baltimore Orioles have signed veteran infielder Thairo Estrada to a minor league contract that includes an invite to Major League spring training, according to a report from El Extrabase.
Estrada, 30, has played parts of seven seasons in MLB, most recently playing 39 games with the Colorado Rockies last season, batting .253/.285/.370 with a .655 OPS in 39 games.
A native of Bejuma, Venezuela, Estrada has appeared in 508 games since 2019 with the New York Yankees, San Francisco Giants, and the Rockies, batting .251/.299/.392 with 51 homers and 216 RBIs. Aside from the Covid-19 Pandemic shortened 2020 season, Estrada has only appeared in 100 or more games in season twice, doing so in 2022 and 2022 with the Giants.
Primarily a middle infielder, Estrada has seen some time in the outfield with the Yankees and Giants, but hasn’t appeared at a position other than second base in the last two seasons. He joins four other middle infielders as non-roster invitees to Orioles camp, shortstops Jose Barrero and Luis Vasquez and second basemen Payton Eeles and Aron Estrada, though the starting jobs in Baltimore are held down by budding superstars in Jackson Holliday at second and Gunnar Hendrickson at short.
Given the logjam in the infield at Orioles camp, should he remain with the club after spring training, Estrada is likely going to fill a bench role in Baltimore or potentially be an everyday depth player at Triple-A Norfolk.
