Baseball European Champions Cup Recap: Extras Needed

Two 2024 Baseball European Champions Cup games took place on Wednesday, June 5. Both games came down to the wire; one needed extra innings to decide a winner.

All regular-season BECC games will be played on Wednesdays, with games on May 15, June 5, June 12, July 17, August 14, and August 21.

These games will be played at Armin-Wolf-Arena in Regensburg, Germany, and at the Baseballový areál Eagles Praha in Prague, Czech Republic.

YD Baseball Arena and Hellensteinenergie Ballpark Heidenheim will host some remaining games at the 2024 BECC.

The top two teams will play the championship game on Saturday, September 28, at a venue to be determined. The 2024 Baseball European Champions Cup title game will start at 9 a.m. EST on September 28.

(0-2) Eagles Praha 1, (1-1) Guggenberger Legionäre Regensburg 2 – Armin-Wolf-Arena 

The Guggenberger Legionare Regensburg won their second game at the 2024 BECC, beating the Eagles Praha 2-1 on Wednesday night.

The Guggenberger Legionare Regensburg pitching staff, with starting pitcher Pablo Guillen and relief pitchers Aljo Sujak, Kieran Lovegrove, and Nicholas Michaele Miceli, threw nine innings, allowing five hits, one earned run, two walks, and 11 strikeouts.

The Eagles Praha pitching staff, including starting pitcher Emmanuel Herrera and relief pitchers Vasko Kolev and Matyas Trcka, threw eight innings, allowing seven hits, two earned runs, four walks, and striking out one batter during their loss on Wednesday.

Eagles Praha got on the board first in the top of the third inning with center fielder Michal Anton driving an RBI single up the middle, scoring catcher Lukas Derganz for the first run of the game.

The Guggenberger Legionare Regensburg offense did not tack on their first run of the game until first baseman Daneil Patrice ripped an RBI single through the left side of the infield, scoring left fielder Lou Helmig in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game up at 1-1.

A few batters later, second baseman Nino Sacasa dialed an RBI single into left field, scoring designated hitter Elias Von Garben to take the lead at 2-1. Patrice was tagged out for trying to advance to third base from Sacasa’s RBI single for the final out of the inning.

Miceli recorded the final six outs of the game on Wednesday night and retired the side in order in the top of the ninth inning 1-2-3 and got Eagles Praha first baseman Pete Zyma to ground out to shortstop Alexander Schimdt as he threw over to Patrice for the final out of the game to win 2-1 on Wednesday night in Regensburg, Germany.

 

(1-1) VOITH Heidenheim Heidekoepfe 4, (2-0) Draci Brno 5  F/10 – YD Baseball Arena Brno 

The Draci Brno remained undefeated at the 2024 Baseball European Champions Cup and beat the VOITH Heidenheim Heidekoepfe 5-4 on Wednesday night in 10 innings, with left fielder Simon Klacl drawing a bases-loaded walk to score shortstop Jakub Hajtmar.

The Draci Brno pitching staff, including starting pitcher Jhenderson Hurtado and relief pitchers Yoervis Medina, Filip Capka, Jan Vasourek, and Tomas Urbanek, pitched 10 innings and allowed five hits, three earned runs, seven walks, and 10 strikeouts during Wednesday’s win.

Hurtado threw two innings and allowed one hit, one walk, and three strikeouts.

Heidenheim starting pitcher Jared Mortensen had a no-decision on Wednesday while throwing six innings, allowing seven hits, four earned runs, one walk, and nine strikeouts.

Draci Brno got on the board in the bottom of the second inning with first baseman Filip Mostek ripping an RBI single into center field, scoring third baseman Martin Cervinka for the game’s first run.

In the bottom of the third inning, Draci Brno right fielder Martin Kalabek drove a two-run home run over the right field wall, scoring Klacl to extend the lead to 3-0.

The Draci Brno offense got their fourth run in the bottom of the fifth inning with center fielder Arnost Dubovy lifting a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Klacl to make it 4-0.

During the top of the eighth inning, the Heidenheim offense piled their first runs of the game with a three-run home run from Shawn Larry down the right field line to score center fielder Gary Owens and third baseman William Germaine to cut the deficit to one run at 4-3.

A few batters later, Heidenheim right fielder David Dinski laced an RBI single back to the mound after Vansourek could not come up with the baseball; catcher Daniel Vavrusa came into the score to tie the game up at 4-4.

In the top of the 10th inning, Hedeinheim had Germaine start on first base and Simon Guhring on second base to begin the half inning.

Urbanek got shortstop Simon Liedtke to ground out to a 4-6-3 double play to end the top of the 10th inning to keep the game tied at 4-4.

In the bottom of the 10th inning, Draci Brno pinch hitter Martin Hrib started on first base, and Hajtmar started at second base.

Draci Brno second baseman Matias Takeda placed an infield bunt single just off the batter’s box and beat out the play to first base to draw up bases loaded with no outs.

Klacl worked a bases-loaded walk on a 3-1 count to score Hatjmar from third base as Wolsenbroek gave up the winning run, losing 5-4 in the second game of the 2024 BECC.
