Baseball European Cup Recap: Two Games End in Mercy Rule

The 2024 Baseball European Cup, a World Baseball Softball Confederation Europe sector event, began on June 4 at Camp Municipal de Beisbol i Sofbol de València in Valencia, Spain.  The 2024 BEC will take place from June 4 to 9 at Camp Municipal de Beisbol i Sofbol de València in Valencia, Spain.  

The Group Round will be from June 4-7. The Semifinals and Relegation Round will be on June 8, and the Relegation Round, bronze medal game, and gold medal game will be on June 9.

Tuesday, June 4 

 

Group B – Diving Ducks (AUT) 0, Les Cougars Montigny 4  

The Les Cougars Montigny blanked the Diving Ducks 4-0 in the first game of the 2024 BEC behind starting pitcher Yorfrank Manuel Lopez Tequedor, throwing nine innings and allowing five hits, three walks, and ten strikeouts. Tequedor dialed 123 pitches with 84 strikes.

Les Cougars Montigny did not score all of their runs on Tuesday until the bottom of the third inning with Diving Ducks catcher Henry Leabourn overthrowing third baseman Clemens Raimann during first baseman Dylan Mayeux’s at-bat on a double steal attempt from Montigny center fielder Killian Besoli sliding into third base and third baseman Warren Coopman going into second base. Besoli scored to make it 1-0 from Leaburn’s error behind the dish with his throw to third.  

A few moments later, Dylan Mayeux ripped a single into center field, with Coopman coming in to score to extend the lead to 2-0.  

Montigny right fielder Tom Mayeux drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring Dylan Mayeux to make it 3-0.  

Cougars left fielder Felipe Gustavo Lot Martins drove an RBI single through the left side of the infield, scoring Tequedor for the fourth run of the game.  

Diving Ducks starting pitcher Eoghan Mc Garry threw 2.2 innings and allowed four hits, four earned runs, and four walks on Tuesday.  

Diving Ducks relief pitcher Rick Van Dijck threw 5.2 innings and allowed four hits, one walk, and seven strikeouts.  

The Diving Ducks defense had two errors during Tuesday’s first game of the 2024 BEC.  

 

Group A – Montpellier Barracudas (FRA) 14, Vienna Metrostars (AUT) 4  F/8 

The Montpellier Barracudas beat the Vienna Metrostars 14-4 in eight innings due to the mercy rule on Tuesday.  

The Montpellier Barracudas pitching staff, including starting pitcher Kevin Canelon and relief pitchers Quentin Scheurer and Corentin Deleau, allowed five hits, four earned runs, five walks, and five strikeouts.  

Canelon threw five innings and allowed two hits, two walks, and five strikeouts against the Vienna Metrostars offense.  

Starting pitcher Stefano Giarraputo and relief pitchers Omar Duenas and Felix Dittrich allowed 13 hits, 13 earned runs, five walks, and one strikeout.  

Barracuda’s designated hitter Douglas Rodriguez struck the scoreboard in the top of the first inning with an RBI single down the left field line, scoring Mael Zan for the game’s first run.  

The next batter, first baseman Yoan Antonac, reached on a throwing error by Vienna Metrostars third baseman Claus Seiser, scoring catcher Fabian Kovacs to extend the lead to 2-0.   

Rodriguez had a solo home run over the right field wall, and Antonac had a solo home run over the left field wall at the top of the eighth inning.

Antonac had four hits in his five at-bats with four RBIs and scored three runs.  

Rodriguez smacked three hits in his four at-bats, scored three runs, and posted two RBI.  

Barracuda’s center fielder Paolo Brossier rocked two hits in his three at-bats with two RBI and scoring two runs.  

Seiser had two hits in his four at-bats, scoring one run and recording one RBI on Tuesday.  

 

Group B – Olimpija Karlovac 0, Tenerife Marlins Puerto Cruz 11 F/7  

The Tenerife Marlins Puerto Cruz beat the Olimpija Karlovac 11-0 in a seven-inning mercy rule.  

Tenerife Marlins Puerto Cruz starting pitcher Elio Silva and relief pitcher Yancarlo Franco combined to allow three hits, one walk, and eight strikeouts.  

The Olimpija Karlovac pitching staff, including starting pitcher Pavao Karin and relief pitcher Ivan Mitrovic, allowed 14 hits, five earned runs, and two walks on Tuesday night.   

Franco started in left field on Tuesday before appearing on the mound at the top of the seventh inning.  

The Marlins did not get on the board until the bottom of the third inning when Franco smoked a ground-rule double over the center field wall, scoring third baseman Leomartires Rodriguez for the game’s first run.  

 A few batters later, second baseman Jesus Ustariz lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, with Franco coming into the score to extend the lead to 2-0.  

Puerto Cruz scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, beginning with right fielder Luis Rodriguez launching a three-run home run over the left field wall, scoring first baseman Richard Montiel and designated hitter Ricardo Mendoza to make it 5-0.  

 Shortstop Edison Valerio roped a double deep to center field a few moments later, scoring Rodriguez for the sixth run of the game.  

Marlins center fielder Lesther Galvan ended the day with two hits in his four at-bats, driving in two RBIs and scoring one run.  

Montiel had one hit in his four at-bats with one RBI and scored twice.  

Mendoza recorded two hits, one RBI, one walk, and scored once in his three at-bats.  

Rodriguez led the day with three hits in his five at-bats and scored twice on Tuesday.
