The Boston Red Sox have three of the top 11 Major League Baseball prospects on the top 100 list on MLB Pipeline.
Outfielder Roman Anthony is the No. 2 ranked prospect, second baseman/shortstop Kristian Campbell, who signed an eight-year, $60 million extension with Boston last week, is the No. 6 rated prospect, and shortstop Marcelo Mayer, the No. 11 ranked prospect in baseball.
Mayer, who hit .333 with one home run in his 44 plate appearances with the Red Sox during spring training, grew up in Chula Vista, California, and his parents were born in Mexico.
Mayer traveled with the Red Sox to Mexico at the end of March, where they played two exhibition games against the Liga Mexicana de Béisbol’s Sultanes de Monterrey. In his first professional baseball game in Mexico, Mayer went 2-for-4 with five RBIs, including a solo home run in the seventh inning at Estadio Mobil Super in Monterrey.
After the series, the 22-year-old spoke with Ian Browne of MLB.com, telling him how much the opportunity to play in Mexico meant to him.
“This was something that I penciled in the offseason,” Mayer told Browne. “I’m super glad that I was able to come. Everything about Mexico, from the people to the food, to the way that people are here, and just the culture, I love everything about it, so I’m super happy to be here.”
Later in their discussion, Mayer, who began the 2025 season at Triple-A Worcester, said he wanted to represent Mexico at the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
“I want to put on a Mexico [jersey]. I want to represent Mexico in the World Baseball Classic, hopefully, next year,” Mayer said to Browne. “They had a great run last World Baseball Classic, and hopefully, I could be a good addition to the team and help the team win. Any chance I could get to represent this country, I’m more than happy to do it.”
Mayer’s offensive ability could prove valuable for Mexico in next year’s WBC. He tore up Eastern League pitching in 77 games in 2024 with Double-A Portland, hitting .307 with eight home runs and a .850 OPS in 335 plate appearances.
Mayer is slashing .267/.313/.467 with two home runs and nine RBIs through seven games with Triple-A Worcester.
