Brewers beat Padres 7-1 behind Luis Rengifo’s 3 RBIs and Kyle Harrison’s 7 Ks

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Luis Rengifo drove in three runs, Kyle Harrison recorded seven strikeouts in five scoreless innings and the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the San Diego Padres 7-1 on Thursday.

The victory capped a 5-1 homestand for the Brewers, who before winning two of three from San Diego.

Harrison (4-1) allowed five hits and no walks to improve his ERA to 2.09.

The Brewers scored three runs in each of the first two innings against Griffin Canning (0-2), who couldn’t make it out of the second.

After starting his day with a strikeout of Jackson Chourio, Canning walked four straight batters. Andrew Vaughn drove in Milwaukee’s first run by taking a 3-2 pitch outside.

Rengifo then hit a two-run single to right.

In the second inning, Brice Turang and Gary Sánchez hit RBI doubles before Vaughn singled home Sánchez.

Canning has yielded 12 runs over six innings in his last two starts.

The Brewers extended the lead to 7-0 in the fourth as Vaughn doubled and scored on a Rengifo single.

Rengifo has gone 7 of 12 over his last three games.

REDS 15, NATIONALS 1

CINCINNATI (AP) — Chase Burns threw six scoreless innings, JJ Bleday homered twice and drove in six runs, and Cincinnati avoided being swept by Washington.

Burns (5-1) allowed two hits while striking out seven and walking two to win his fourth consecutive decision.

The 23-year-old right-hander worked around a three-error fifth inning — one of which was his after dropping a toss while covering first base — to keep the Nationals scoreless. He’s allowed only one earned run in his last three starts.

Matt McLain staked Burns to a 2-0 lead in the second inning with his fourth home run of the year and the Reds’ first of four on the day.

Bleday added a three-run blast in the fifth to make it 9-0, marking the end of the day for Washington starter Foster Griffin (4-2).

Griffin had allowed only 11 earned runs in eight starts for a 2.12 ERA before surrendering nine in 4 1/3 innings against the Reds.

PIRATES 7, ROCKIES 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Endy Rodriguez had two hits and drove in a pair of runs in his return to the majors and breezed past .

Rodriguez, a catcher once considered among the top prospects in Pittsburgh’s farm system before and most of 2025 due to a pair of , doubled off Chase Dollander (3-3) in the second and added a two-run single in the third in his first big league appearance since June 6, 2025.

Ryan O’Hearn had three hits for Pittsburgh, including a two-run homer in the first as the Pirates raced to an early lead and cruised. Rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin and Jared Triolo added two hits each as Pittsburgh began a six-game homestand by taking two of three from the Rockies.

Carmen Mlodzinski (3-3) allowed two runs in five innings after coming on after left-handed relievers Mason Montgomery and Evan Sisk. Pittsburgh manager Don Kelly opted to use Montgomery and Sisk early to offset the lefty-heavy portion of Colorado’s lineup. The right-handed Mlodzinski has struggled at times this year against lefties, but by the time he came on in the third, he’d been staked to a comfortable 6-0 lead.

Dollander, a first-round pick by the Rockies in 2023 who has been solid early in the season, struggled in the first and was removed just two batters into the second with what the club described as right arm tightness.

Troy Johnston hit a two-run double for Colorado, but the Rockies lost for the sixth time in their last seven games at PNC Park after the Pirates took quick command.

METS 9, TIGERS 4

NEW YORK (AP) — A.J. Ewing hit his first big league home run to spark a comeback for , who completed a three-game sweep of .

Ewing, who was promoted prior to the series opener Tuesday, hit a 405-foot shot off Keider Montero (2-3) leading off the third. He was 3 for 9 with three RBIs and four walks against the Tigers as the Mets recorded their first sweep since taking three straight from the Philadelphia Phillies in August.

Brett Baty hit a two-run homer in the fourth and a tie-breaking RBI single off Tyler Holton in the fifth, one pitch before Mark Vientos’ two-run shot.

Hayden Senger added a safety squeeze in the sixth and Soto and Marcus Semien went deep in the seventh and eighth.

Nolan McLean (2-2) gave up Gage Workman’s three-run homer in the first but lasted seven innings as he ended his winless streak at six starts. He allowed six hits, walked three and struck out seven.

Dillon Dingler homered in the eighth for Detroit.

TWINS 9, MARLINS 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Zebby Matthews threw seven scoreless innings in his , and beat to win consecutive series for the first time in a month.

Matthews, who was the last cut from the rotation competition at the end of spring training, was promoted from Triple-A to help manage workloads by pushing the other starters back. The right-hander pitched like he deserves to stay with just four hits and one walk allowed over 83 pitches. He had five strikeouts.

Austin Martin and Josh Bell had two-run doubles in a five-run second inning against Marlins starter Braxton Garrett, spoiling his first appearance in nearly two years.

Martin and James Outman each had two hits, a walk and three RBIs for the Twins, who have won four of their last five games after a 5-16 stretch from April 15 through May 8. They took two of three at Cleveland last weekend and two of three from Miami to start a nine-game homestand this week.

Garrett got only four outs, after he was called up from Triple-A to replace in the rotation. He allowed five runs on four hits and five walks, though after loading the bases to start the game he finished the first inning with three straight strikeouts.

MARINERS 8, ASTROS 3

HOUSTON (AP) — Luke Raley hit a three-run home run, Mitch Garver added his first homer of the season and beat .

Raley scored the game’s opening runs in the first inning with his 10th homer of the year and third of this road trip. Garver, starting at catcher in place of , added a shot in the fourth that scored J.P. Crawford and put Seattle up 5-1.

Cole Young added a one-run double in the sixth, and Crawford doubled in the eighth to plate Brice Matthews and cap the Mariners’ scoring.

Luis Castillo (1-4) earned his first win of the year after pitching 5 2/3 innings and giving up three runs on four hits. He struck out six batters and walked four. Domingo Gonzalez pitched the final two frames, giving up one hit.

Yordan Alvarez homered for the 14th time this year in the third, and Braden Shewmake scored two runs on a double in the sixth.

Mike Burrows (2-5) took the loss after surrendering seven runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.

CARDINALS 5, ATHLETICS 4

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Jordan Walker had a solo homer and drove in the go-ahead run in the ninth inning to lead St. Louis to a win over the Athletics.

Trailing 4-3, Iván Herrera tied the game with a single to left field that scored Thomas Saggese before Walker’s double put the Cardinals ahead.

Nick Kurtz opened the scoring in the first with a solo home run for the Athletics.

Victor Scott II homered in the fifth to tie the game tied at 1.

Walker added his 12th home run of the year in the sixth inning to put St. Louis ahead 2-1, and Nolan Gorman followed with a single to right field for a 3-1 lead.

Matt Svanson (1-1) pitched a scoreless eighth inning, giving up one hit and striking out two. Michael McGreevy got the start and threw six innings, giving up one run on five hits while striking out three.

Zack Gelof homered for the second consecutive day in the seventh, and Shea Langeliers hit a two-run single to put the Athletics up 4-3 in the seventh.

Jack Perkins (2-2) had his second blown save of the season in 2/3 innings.

CUBS 2, BRAVES 0

ATLANTA (AP) — Ian Happ hit a long home run and five Chicago pitchers combined for a shutout of Atlanta, snapping a four-game losing streak.

Ben Brown made his second straight start after starting the season with 12 appearances out of the bullpen. He allowed just one hit in four innings and struck out seven in 65 pitches. In his two starts, he has not allowed a run in eight innings.

Hoby Milner (1-0) earned the win with two scoreless innings, Phil Maton and Jacob Webb each threw a scoreless frame and Daniel Palencia struck out two in the ninth for his third save. The Braves, who lead the majors in runs scored, were shut out for the second time this season and had just five hits.

Chris Sale (6-3) allowed just one unearned run in six innings for the Braves as he worked around five hits and two walks. He had eight strikeouts and left six Cubs on base.

Happ’s home run led off the eighth inning and traveled 424 feet to right field, bouncing off the side of the Chop House restaurant. It came off Reynaldo López and extended the Cubs’ lead to 2-0.

Michael Busch was 1 for 3 with a single, extending his on-base streak to 15 games.

PHILLIES 3, RED SOX 1

BOSTON (AP) — Kyle Schwarber hit his major league-leading 18th home run, a two-run shot that broke a scoreless tie in the eighth inning, and Philadelphia defeated Boston.

Schwarber has seven homers in his last seven games, the first Phillies player to hit at least that many in a similar span since current teammate Trea Turner in 2023. Schwarber’s towering shot in this one cleared the visiting bullpen in right field and traveled an estimated 417 feet.

Bryson Stott added an insurance run later in the eighth on an infield hit on which he was initially called out, but it was overturned after the Phillies challenged.

Brad Keller (2-1) struck out two in one relief inning for the win and Jhoan Duran fanned the side in the ninth for his seventh save.

Wilyer Abreu’s RBI single in the eighth accounted for Boston’s lone run. The Red Sox wrapped up a homestand during which they dropped two of three in series against Tampa Bay and Philadelphia.

WHITE SOX 6, ROYALS 2

CHICAGO (AP) — Randal Grichuk hit a two-run homer and drove in four runs to lead Chicago to its fifth straight win, beating Kansas City.

Chase Meidroth had two hits and an RBI as the White Sox improved to 22-21 and moved over .500 this late in the season for the first time since 2022. Chicago, losers of 101 or more games in each of the last three seasons, are within one game of idle Cleveland for first place in the AL Central.

Anthony Kay (3-1) allowed two runs and six hits in six-plus innings as Chicago swept its third series this season and extended the Royals’ losing streak to four games.

Kay was relieved by Tyler Davis after Kyle Isbel tripled to lead off the seventh, then Sean Newcomb tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth for his first save.

Lane Thomas and Maikel Garcia drove in the Royals’ runs and Salvador Perez had two hits. Kris Bubic (3-2) allowed five runs and five hits with three walks over four innings.
