One of college baseball’s biggest storylines in the 2025 season will be in Columbia, S.C., with the South Carolina Gamecocks. One of the game’s best programs is entering a new era. Legendary coach Paul Mainieri, who retired from LSU in 2021, has taken over the program.

The former headman of the Tigers brings a lot of accolades to the Palmetto State.
He is the current active wins leader in college baseball (1,505), a four-time National Coach of the Year, a two-time SEC Coach of the Year, a winner of six SEC Tournaments, and has made six trips to Omaha for the College World Series.
In 2009, he led LSU to its first national championship in nine years.
Looking strictly at his accomplishments, Mainieri seems to be the man who can get the job done for South Carolina.
The Gamecocks have not returned to Omaha and the College World Series since 2012, a year after they won back-to-back national championships in 2010 and 2011. They are the last team to win back-to-back titles.
Since 2012, the Gamecocks have made the NCAA Tournament seven times. However, all of those attempts have come up short.
It may not be in 2025, but Mainieri has the background to get South Carolina back to the top of college baseball like it was 15 years ago.
