Sometimes, a career can come full circle.

So it is for Carl Edwards Jr., who rejoined the Texas Rangers, the team that selected him in the 48th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft, on a minor league contract this week.

It’s the second return to affiliated baseball this season for Edwards, a 6-foot-3, 165-pound righty who was originally headed to the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol with the Tigres de Quintana Roo before signing with the Los Angeles Angels in March. After starting the season with Triple-A Salt Lake, Edwards was called up to the Angels on April 23, and appeared in two games, throwing three innings with a 9.00 ERA. He was designated for assignment on April 26 and elected free agency four days later, then headed south of the border to the Tigres.

With Quintana Roo, Edwards has put together a good season on one of the LMB’s worst teams, throwing 74 2/3 innings over 14 starts with a 3.38 ERA and a 1.232 WHIP, striking out 60 with 24 walks. The Tigres are in last place in the LMB’s Zona Sur with a 31-48 record, 24 1/2 games behind the first-place Diablos Rojos del Mexico.

The Rangers have assigned Edwards to the Triple-A Round Rock Express, shoring up a rotation that has been thinned out over the past  month when Gerson Garabito left to sign with the Korea Baseball Organization’s Samsung Lions and Dane Dunning was traded to the Atlanta Braves a week ago. The Express are 11-8 in the second half of the Pacific Coast League regular season.

Edwards has a 3.59 career ERA in MLB over 283 innings across 11 seasons with the Chicago Cubs, San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners, Atlanta Braves, Toronto Blue Jays, Washington Nationals, and Los Angeles Angels.
