Catalunya defeated the Algodoneros de Guasave 4-1 in their second game of the Barcelona Baseball Cup. The teams faced off the previous night, with Guasave winning 3-0.
Eugene Encina opened the game for the Algodoneros, pitching two innings. He was followed by eight different arms: Gonzalo Ochoa, Christian Crespo, Ian Medina, Alex Longoria, Jesus Huerta, Jeffrey Ibarra, Rafael Cordova and Carlos Morales. It is the second straight contest where Guasave deployed eight pitchers as they get ready for the season in the Liga ARCO Mexicana del Pacifico.
Catalunya used a different approach on the mound. Jorge Balboa started the game and went five innings, allowing just two hits and one run. He struck out seven before Marc Civit came in and notched a rare three-plus inning save.
Frank Hernandez and Omar Hernandez each went 3-for-5, with Hernandez picking up an RBI as well. Wander Encarnacion went 2-5 at the plate with two RBIs.
The tournament will run through September 29 and features four teams. The Algodoneros de Guasave of Liga ARCO Mexicana del Pacífico, the Cocodrilos de Matanzas of the Cuban Serie Nacional, Catalunya, and the Spain All-Star Team.
Federació Catalana Beisbol i Softbol organizes the competition taking place at Estadio Viladecans and Estadio Barcelona in Spain.
Catalunya will take on the Spain All-Star team on September 27, while the Algodoneros de Guasave will face the Cocodrilos de Matanzas later in the day.
