Cleveland Regains Lead in AL Central: One Thing From Each MLB Game

Cleveland avoided the sweep and regained control of first place in the AL Central thanks to a four-run seventh inning. Here’s everything you missed from yesterday in the MLB.

Guardians 7, Royals 5

  • The Guardians rallied with four runs in the seventh inning to regain a hold on first place in the AL Central. Bo Naylor sparked the comeback with a solo homer to start the seventh, and Jhonkensy Noel picked up an RBI single to give Cleveland the lead. Cleveland moved back to one game above Kansas City atop the division and snapped their three-game losing streak to the Royals.

Cubs 14, Pirates 10

  • Christian Bethancourt drove in seven runs, including the go-ahead two-run single as a part of a six-run ninth inning to give the Cubs the win. Chicago swept the Pirates and have won six of the last seven. The Cubs are five back of a wild card spot.

Astros 10, Phillies 0

  • Rookie Spencer Arrighetti took a no-hit bid into the eighth inning and had 11 strikeouts for Houston, who avoided the sweep from the Phillies. Yordan Alvarez had three home runs and four RBIs to lead the charge on offense. The Astros have a three-and-a-half-game lead in the AL West.

Mariners 6, Rays 2 

  • Victor Robles and Julio Rodriguez hit two-run homers in the fifth inning, giving the Mariners the lead and the series win. Luis Castillo picked up the win after allowing two runs in five and two-thirds. Randy Arozarena hit a home run for the second time in the series against his former team.

Rangers 3, White Sox 1 

  • The Rangers took the first game of the doubleheader after Marcus Semien broke the tie with a double in the seventh inning. Corey Seager drove in an insurance run in the next at-bat to grow the Texas lead.

Tigers 3, Angels 2 

  • Detroit won their sixth straight and drew within four and a half games of the final AL wild-card spot. Spencer Torkelson opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the second inning. Kerry Carpenter drove in what proved to be the winning run on a single in the third. The Tigers moved to two games over .500 for the first time since May 7.

A’s 9, Reds 6

  • Oakland had a five-run lead in the seventh but surrendered the advantage in the bottom of the inning. Seth Brown hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning that helped the A’s regain the lead and come away with the win. The A’s had four home runs in the game and pushed their winning streak to four games.

Nationals 5, Yankees 2

  • Dylan Crews hit a leadoff homer for Washington, his first in the MLB, and the Nationals won the final two against the AL’s best team. Crews drove in another run on a double in the fourth inning, growing the Nationals’ lead.

Red Sox 3, Blue Jays 0

  • Brayan Bello pitched eight innings, the longest outing of his career, and allowed two hits and had nine strikeouts to pick up the win. Wilyer Abreu put Boston on the board with a single in the first inning that proved to be the winning run. A two-run homer from Tyler O’Neill in the eighth extended the Red Sox lead.

Braves 5, Twins 1

  • The Braves finished the sweep and pushed the Twins losing streak to four games thanks to six innings of one-hit ball from Chris Sale, who won his 15th game of the season. Matt Olson broke the 1-1 tie in the seventh with a double that started a four-run inning.

Cardinals 4, Padres 3

  • Nolan Arenado drove in the winning run with a single in the ninth to give the Cardinals the win in game three of the series. Luis Arraez had his sixth four-hit game of the season in a losing effort.

Brewers 5, Giants 3

  • Milwaukee scored all five runs in the fifth inning, capped off by a two-run homer from William Contreras. Freddy Peralta struck out eight batters and allowed two hits in six innings. Heliot Ramos drove in a run on a single in a two-run eighth for the Giants, but San Francisco fell short of the win.

Rangers 4, White Sox 3

  • Corey Seager gave the Rangers the lead on a single in the ninth inning before Travis Jankowski robbed Andrew Vaughn of a game-winning homer. Wyatt Langford drove in three runs with a homer in the fourth inning and helped the Rangers sweep the doubleheader in Chicago. Rookie Jack Leiter allowed two runs in four innings in his first start since May 14.

Rockies 8, Marlins 2 

  • Aaron Schunk hit his first MLB home run, which gave the Rockies the advantage in the fifth inning and helped them win. Kyle Freeland allowed two runs and had five Ks in six innings.

Diamondbacks 8, Mets 5

  • Corbin Carroll hit a grand slam off Edwin Diaz in the eighth to push Arizona to victory. Carroll hit a solo homer as a part of a two-home run night. The Diamondbacks have won seven of their last eight.

Dodgers 6, Orioles 4

  • Shohei Ohtani led off the game with his 42nd home run of the season, and Teoscar Hernandez gave the Dodgers the lead in the third with a three-run homer. Ohtani stole two bases in the game and moved closer to the first 50-50 season in league history.
