College World Series: Seven Teams Have Advanced To Omaha; Duke and Murray State Decide Final Spot Tonight

Murray State pounds Duke 19-9 to force deciding game in Durham Super Regional – Dustin Mercer had four hits, Dom Decker and Will Verling drove in four runs apiece and Mercer pounded Duke 19-9 on Sunday to force a deciding third game in the Durham Super Regional.

Four players scored three times and two scored twice as the Racers (43-15) scored 10-plus runs for the seventh time in 11 games. Jonathan Hogart, Carson Garner, Dan Tauken and Connor Cunningham had home runs.

The deciding game is Monday at Duke’s Jack Coombs Field, which was built 94 years ago and is holding its first postseason playoff games. Game Two attendance was 2,689, three less than the record crowd that attended the opener.

Duke’s last College World Series appearance was in 1961, and Murray State has never made it there.

Murray State took a 10-3 lead with a five-run fourth inning. The Blue Devils (40-20) got back in the game with five runs in the sixth, but a nine-run seventh broke it open for the Racers.

Decker had a two-run single, Vierling a two-run double and Tauken and Cunningham homered in the seventh.

AJ Gracia and Ben Miller had back-to-back solo home runs in the first for Duke and Wallace Clark added another in the third. Ben Rounds had a two-run double in the sixth and Macon Winslow capped the rally with a two-run homer. Rounds added a solo shot in the eighth.

Isaac Silva (8-2) went 5 1/3 innings, giving up six runs for Murray State and Graham Kelham gave up a hit and a run over the final three innings for his seventh save.

Kyle Johnson (4-4) took the loss after giving up six runs in the first three innings.

Monday night’s deciding game three will be telecast live on ESPN.

Brennan’s 3 hits, 2 RBIs help UCLA beat UTSA 7-0 and win super regional, clinch berth in CWS – Payton Brennan had three hits, two RBIs and scored two runs on Sunday and UCLA beat UTSA 7-0 to win the Los Angeles Super Regional and advance to the College World Series.

UCLA won its first super regional title since 2013 when the Bruins claimed the program’s only national championship. The No. 15 seed Bruins (46-16) advance to the College World Series and play the winner between Duke and Murray State in the CWS.

Brennan hit a two-out double and Toussaint Bythewood followed with an RBI single off starter Conor Myles (5-2) to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead in the fourth. Phoenix Call led off the fifth with a bunt single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dean West before Roch Cholowsky drove in Call with a single to left field that made it 2-0.

UCLA starter Landon Stump hit Andrew Stucky with a pitch to lead off the fifth and was replaced by Chris Grothues (4-1), who got Norris McClure to ground into a 6-3 double play — the Bruins 63rd of the season, the most in the nation — before Mason Lytle struck out looking to end the inning.

Grothues, Cal Randall, August Souza and Easton Hawk combined for five no-hit innings of relief for the Bruins.

The Bruins added two runs in the eighth and three in the ninth, including Brennan’s two-run single.

UTSA (47-15) saw its historic season, including a program single-season wins record, come to a close. The Roadrunners beat Kansas State in their opener at the Austin Regional for UTSA’s first postseason win and then beat No. 2 national seed Texas twice to claim the program’s first regional title.

Coastal Carolina sweeps Auburn to reach College World Series for 2nd time – Jacob Morrison and Hayden Johnson combined to scatter eight hits and Coastal Carolina defeated Auburn 4-1 on Saturday to sweep the Auburn Super Regional and reach the College World Series for the second time.

The Chanticleers will try to duplicate the national championship they won in 2016.

Morrison allowed one run on six hits with six strikeouts in six innings. Johnson (5-0) came on in the seventh and pitched three scoreless innings with two hits and five strikeouts.

Coastal Carolina’s three-run seventh inning featured an RBI single by Walker Mitchell and a series of Auburn miscues led to the other two runs.

With the scored tied 1-1 after Mitchell’s single, he moved up a base on a single by Blagen Pado and scored from second on a throwing error by the first baseman on a ball hit by Ty Dooley. A walk by Ty Barrango loaded the bases and Coastal’s third run scored when Wells Sykes was hit by a pitch.

Mitchell drove in the final run with a single in the eighth inning.

Caden Bodine’s 10th-inning home run early Saturday morning gave the Chanticleers a 7-6 victory in the first game.

Louisville makes 6th CWS with 3-2 win over Miami on King’s RBI double in 7th – Eddie King Jr. doubled in the winning run in the seventh inning to lift Louisville to a 3-2 win over Miami on Sunday, advancing the Cardinals to their sixth College World Series.

King’s clutch hit came after Jake Munroe’s two-out single and a wild pitch.

Neither team was among the top 16 seeds, but the Cardinals (39-21) were the surprise winners of the Nashville Regional hosted by overall No. 1 seed Vanderbilt and Miami won Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg Regional.

Louisville will face the Oregon State-Florida State winner in Omaha, Nebraska, later this week. Miami (34-26) was hoping for its 26th CWS appearance.

Miami took the lead on Max Galvin’s two-run homer in the third. The Cardinals got those back in the fourth on an RBI double by Zion Rose and a fielder’s choice.

Miami starter Ethan Eberle went five innings, allowing six hits. Jake Schweitzer (4-2) gave up two hits and two walks in three innings. Justin West got two outs in the ninth but also walked two before Brennyn Cutts got a flyout for his second save.

Brown, Milam drive in 4 runs each, LSU beats West Virginia 12-5 to clinch 20th CWS berth – Jake Brown hit a home run and had four RBIs, Steven Milam had two doubles and also drove in four runs and LSU beat West Virginia 12-5 on Sunday night to sweep the best-of-three Baton Rouge Super Regional.

No. 6 seed LSU (48-15) clinched the program’s 20th berth in the College World Series, where the Tigers will try to win their eighth national championship — all since 1991, the most recent in 2023.

Derek Curiel led off the game with a double and scored to make it 1-0 when Brown reached on a fielder’s choice in the first inning and the Tigers led the rest of the way.

Anthony Eyanson (11-2) gave up four runs on five hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in five innings.

Chris Stanfield, Curiel and Ethan Frey each drew a two-out walk to load the bases before Milam cleared the bases with a double off starter Jack Kartsonas (6-4) to spark a five-run second that made it 6-0.

After Jace Rinehart hit a two-out solo shot and pinch-hitter Chase Swain drew a walk, Chase Shores came on a struck out Brodie Kresser swinging to end the eighth and the pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.

Sam White hit a leadoff homer and Ben Lumsden added a two-run shot in the fourth before White added an RBI single in the fifth to cut the deficit to 6-4.

Stanfield hit a two-RBI single to spark a six-run seventh, capped when Brown’s two-run home run gave LSU an eight-run lead.

Milam and Josh Pearson each hit a grand slam as LSU beat the Mountaineers 16-9 in Game 1 on Saturday.

Caraway’s grand slam helps Oregon State beat Florida State 14-10, advance to CWS – Trent Caraway hit a grand slam and Gavin Turley added a two-run home run in the third inning to help No. 8 seed Oregon State beat Florida State 14-10 on Sunday night to win the best-of three Corvallis Super Regional.

The Beavers (47-14-1) advance to the College World Series for the eighth time in program history and the first since 2018, when Oregon State won the most recent of its CWS titles.

Krieg walked, Reeder was hit by a pitch and McEntire drew an eight-pitch walk to set up Caraway’s slam and Turley’s shot made it 13-3.

Zach Kmatz (2-0) gave up two runs over 2 2/3 relief innings.

Max Williams hit a two-run homer in the top of the first but Oregon State responded in the bottom. Reeder hit a three-run home run off starter Wes Mendes (7-3) before McEntire added a solo shot to that gave the Beavers a 7-2 lead.

Chase Williams hit a solo shot in the second for No. 9 seed Florida State (42-16). Lodise had an RBI in the fourth and, after Tyce Peterson responded with a solo homer for OSU, Jaxson West and Gage Harrelson each drove in a run in the fifth. Myles Bailey hit a two-run home run in the six to make it 14-8.

Brody DeLamielleure and Harrelson drove in a run apiece to cap the scoring in the ninth.

The Seminoles beat Oregon State 3-1 on Saturday to avoid elimination after the Beavers rallied to win the opener 5-4 in 10 innings.

Maxwell’s grand slam highlights Arkansas super regional win eliminating Tennessee 11-4 – Logan Maxwell had three hits, including a game-breaking grand slam, and Arkansas defeated defending national champion Tennessee 11-4 on Sunday to sweep the best-of-three Fayetteville Super Regional and advance to the College World Series for the 12th time.

The Razorbacks had a 3-1 lead with two outs in the fourth inning when Maxwell hit a 1-2 pitch over the left-field wall. That was more than enough for third-seeded Arkansas to advance to Omaha, Nebraska.

Arkansas (47-13) will face the winner of the Baton Rouge Super Regional between LSU and West Virginia.

Tennessee (46-18), the No. 14 overall seed, only had two hits when they lost to their SEC rivals 4-3 on Saturday.

The Vols almost became just the third team from their conference to finish a super regional with fewer than 10 total hits. With two hits in the eighth and two in the ninth, including a two-run home run by pinch hitter Jay Abernathy, they finished with eight.

Charles Davalan had a two-run homer in the third for Arkansas. Tennessee got one back in the bottom of the inning, but Maxwell’s big bash broke it open in the fourth.

White caps rally in 8th with 2-run single, Arizona to CWS with 4-3 win over Tar Heels – Mason White’s two-run single capped a three-run eighth inning, lifting Arizona to a 4-3 victory over North Carolina on Sunday to earn the Wildcats their 19th trip to the College World Series.

Arizona (44-19) dropped the opener of the Chapel Hill Super Regional 18-2 to the fifth-seeded Tar Heels (46-15) before winning 10-8 on Saturday and rallying on Sunday.

The Wildcats, whose last appearance in the CWS was in 2021, will face Coastal Carolina in Omaha, Nebraska, later this week

The final game belonged to the pitchers as both teams mustered just five hits.

Arizona starter Smith Bailey gave up three runs and all five hits in his six innings. Two of the hits were singles ahead of Jackson Van De Brake’s home run in the third. Julian Tonghini (5-2) pitched a perfect seventh, Casey Hintz gave up a pair of walks in a scoreless eighth, and Tony Pluta faced three batters in the ninth for his 14th save.

Garen Caulfield gave Arizona a 1-0 lead in the second with a solo home run. The Wildcats had one hit from there until Andrew Cain singled leading off the eighth.

An error put two on base before Walker McDuffie relieved starter Ryan Lynch. That’s when Easton Breyfogle beat out a bunt to third with Cain scoring when the third baseman threw the ball away. A walk loaded the bases before McDuffie (3-3) recorded an out with an infield fly. White greeted reliever Aidan Haugh with a single up the middle for the lead.

Arizona is heading to the finals for only the fifth time since winning its third national title in 1986. The Wildcats also won in 1976, 1980 and 2012.
