Colombian RHP Julio Teheran To Join Charros de Jalisco For 2024-25 Regular Season

The Charros de Jalisco organization announced on August 26 that Colombian right-handed pitcher Julio Teheran will join the team for the 2024-25 Liga ARCO Mexicana del Pacifico regular season.

Teheran, 33, was born in Cartagena, Colombia, and played in Major League Baseball for 12 seasons, including with the Atlanta Braves from 2011-19, the Los Angeles Angels in 2020, the Detroit Tigers in 2021, the Milwaukee Brewers in 2023, and the New York Mets in 2024.

Teheran was a two-time All-Star in 2014 and 2016.

He signed as a free agent to the Mets on April 5 and made one start with the organization against the Braves on the road on April 8 and threw 2.2 innings, allowing six hits, four earned runs, one home run, two walks, three strikeouts, and posted a 13.50 ERA before him being designated for assignment on April 9.

Teheran was sent outright to Triple-A Syracuse on April 11 and decided to elect free agency the same day before signing with the North Side.

He was assigned to Triple-A Iowa on April 18 and started in eight games, posting a 1-4 record with an 8.82 ERA, throwing 32.2 innings, allowing 48 hits, 32 earned runs, eight home runs, 11 walks, 37 strikeouts, and a 1.806 WHIP before electing free agency on June 4.

Teheran was assigned to Triple-A Norfolk from the Florida Complex League on June 9.

He went 1-1 with Triple-A Norfolk, posting a 9.18 ERA in four starts, throwing 16.2 innings, allowing 23 hits, 17 earned runs, three home runs, 11 walks, and 12 strikeouts before being released by the Orioles organization on June 29.

Teheran signed as a free agent to the Sultanes de Monterrey in the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol and went 1-1 in three starts with a 2.35 ERA, throwing 15.1 innings, allowing 15 hits, four earned runs, two home runs, three walks, 12 strikeouts, and a 1.174 WHIP.

In the 2024 LMB playoffs, Teheran is 3-0 with a 3.38 ERA in his five starts. He has pitched 26.2 innings and allowed 20 hits, 10 earned runs, five home runs, seven walks, 22 strikeouts, and a 1.01 WHIP.

Teheran signed a minor league contract with the Baltimore Orioles on February 28 and was invited to big league camp.

During spring training, he started in four games and posted a 1-1 record, throwing 13.1 innings with a 3.38 ERA, allowing nine hits, five earned runs, seven walks, and ten strikeouts prior to signing with the Mets.

Last season, Teheran started with the San Diego Padres organization in Triple-A El Paso and played in eight games. He posted a 4-2 record with a 5.63 ERA in 40 innings, allowing 51 hits, 25 earned runs, seven home runs, 16 walks, 45 strikeouts, and a 1.675 WHIP before he was released on May 24, 2023.

Milwaukee signed Teheran to a minor league contract on May 25, 2023. Teheran started in 11 games and 14 appearances for the Brewers, throwing 71.2 innings with a 4.40 ERA, allowing 68 hits, 35 earned runs, 13 home runs, 13 walks, 50 strikeouts, and a 1.130 WHIP.

Teheran landed on the 15-day injured list with a right hip impingement on July 30, 2023.

He was transferred to High-A Wisconsin on a rehab assignment on August 25, 2023, and started one game, throwing three innings. He allowed three hits, one earned run, one home run, and struck out four in a no-decision before he was sent to Triple-A Nashville on August 31.

Teheran started in three games with Triple-A Nashville, posting a 2-0 record with a 4.40 ERA. He pitched 14.1 innings, allowing 13 hits, seven earned runs, one home run, six walks, and 13 strikeouts before he elected free agency.

During the 2022-23 winter league season, Teheran played in LIDOM with the Toros del Este and started in eight games with a 2-4 record, posting a 3.49 ERA, throwing 38.2 innings, allowing 34 hits, 15 earned runs, three walks, 25 strikeouts, and a 0.957 WHIP.

In Teheran’s 17 seasons in the minors, the winter leagues, LMB, and MLB, he has a lifetime record of 134-125. He has thrown 2,248 innings with a 3.86 ERA and 407 appearances, starting 399 games. He has thrown seven complete games and three shutouts, allowing 2,057 hits, 964 earned runs, 273 home runs, 717 walks, 1,969 strikeouts, and a 1.234 WHIP.

The Charros de Jalisco will play the Venados de Mazatlan at home on October 12 at 8 p.m. EST at Estadio Panamericano de BΓ©isbol in Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico and will be streamed with a paid subscription service on https://www.extrabase.tv/home.
