SAN DIEGO (AP) — Left-hander Cristopher Sánchez pitched seven brilliant innings, extending his scoreless streak to 44 2/3 innings and passing Hall of Famer Grover Cleveland Alexander for , in a 3-0 win Wednesday against the San Diego Padres for a three-game sweep.
Sánchez (6-2) reached the milestone by getting through the four full innings he needed to pass Alexander, who had a 41-innng scoreless streak in 1911. He kept going through three more scoreless innings before leaving after throwing 100 pitches. He allowed six hits, struck out nine and walked none.
He pumped his fists as he walked off the mound after striking out pinch-hitter Ty France to end the seventh.
He set another franchise record by going at least seven scoreless innings for the fifth straight start, becoming the sixth to so in MLB history.
Trea Turner homered leading off the ninth, his seventh, and Kyle Schwarber hit an RBI single during the two-run sixth.
With Sánchez an inning away from the record, there was a heart-stopping moment as Manny Machado lifted a fly ball to left that Edmundo Sosa caught just in front of the wall leading off the fourth. Sánchez struck out Xander Bogaerts, Ramon Laureano doubled to left and then the lefty then got Jackson Merrill to ground out to second base to set the record.
Machado had homered in .
The Padres stranded runners in scoring position in the first and second innings, and Gavin Sheets lifted a fly ball just in front of the warning track in right to end the third.
José Alvarado pitched the ninth for his first save.
GUARDIANS 3, NATIONALS 2
CLEVELAND (AP) — Gavin Williams settled down after a choppy start and pitched seven solid innings as Cleveland beat Washington to salvage the finale of a three-game series.
Williams (8-3) allowed one run and only three hits — all in the first three innings. The right-hander needed 24 pitches to get out of the first and then threw just 19 combined from the fourth through the sixth. He retired his final 13 batters.
Tim Herrin worked the eighth and Cade Smith gave up a run in the ninth before striking out two with the tying run at second for his MLB-leading 19th save.
Rookie Travis Bazzana had two doubles and José Ramírez drove in a run for Cleveland, which was outscored 16-5 in the first two games.
Washington’s James Wood went 8 for 12 in the series with two homers, three RBIs and five runs.
Unable to score more than three runs in any of their last seven games, the Guardians finally strung hits together in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. They got some help as Nationals third baseman Curtis Mead couldn’t handle Austin Hedges’ hard-hit leadoff grounder for an error.
Ramírez hit a sacrifice fly off Miles Mikolas (1-4) and rookie Chase DeLauter and Angel Martinez delivered RBI singles off Richard Lovelady.
BLUE JAYS 2, MARLINS 1
TORONTO (AP) — Kazuma Okamoto hit a tiebreaking home run in the sixth inning and Toronto beat Miami.
Jeff Hoffman (3-3) got four outs for the win as the Blue Jays won for the eighth time in 12 games. Tyler Rogers finished for his second save in four chances.
Otto Lopez went 4 for 4 with an RBI, but the Marlins lost their second straight after winning the previous four.
Miami put runners at first and second with nobody out against Louis Varland in the eighth but couldn’t score. Jakob Marsee grounded into a fielder’s choice, then got caught stealing second as Connor Norby struck out.
Okamoto connected off left-hander Andrew Nardi (3-3), his 11th homer of the season. He hadn’t gone deep since May 5 at Tampa Bay.
The home run came in Okamoto’s first plate appearance after being hit by a 97 mph pitch from Miami’s Eury Pérez.
After Pérez hit Okamoto, he appeared to stare into Toronto’s dugout. Blue Jays manager John Schneider yelled at Pérez, but the situation did not escalate.
Pérez set a season-high by striking out nine in four shutout innings but while he was stretching in the dugout.
BREWERS 2, CARDINALS 1
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Held , Milwaukee broke through in the eighth with three hits and two runs to beat St. Louis.
Dustin May carried a no-hitter into the eighth for the Cardinals, who have lost seven of nine games. May was looking to become just the third pitcher in the history of American Family Field, which opened in 2001, to pitch a no-hitter.
Garrett Mitchell led off the eighth with a double and Luis Rengifo followed with a single, chasing May (3-6). After Sal Frelick grounded into a fielder’s choice and pinch-hitter Andrew Vaughn struck out looking, Christian Yelich singled to drive in Mitchell to tie the score, with Frelick moving to third. Frelick then scored when Masyn Winn booted Jackson Chourio’s grounder.
The Cardinals got on the board in the fourth against Brewers starter Chad Patrick when Jordan Walker led off with a single and later scored on Bryan Torres’ triple.
The Brewers, who hold the top spot in the NL Central, have won 15 of their last 19 games.
Patrick gave up five hits and one run in four innings while walking one and striking out four.
Shane Drohan, Aaron Ashby and Trevor Megill combined for five scoreless innings.
Ashby (9-0) took over the major league lead in wins and Megill recorded his sixth save in seven tries.
MARINERS 9, ATHLETICS 1
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Rob Refsnyder and Julio Rodríguez hit three-run home runs and Logan Gilbert threw six shutout innings as Seattle beat the Athletics to complete a series sweep and move into first place in the AL West.
Refsnyder hit a full-count changeup 368 feet to left field, scoring J.P. Crawford and Josh Naylor for a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
Colt Emerson hit his first MLB triple in the fourth inning, driving in two runs, and Seattle added another run on a throwing error by Athletics shortstop Darell Hernaiz, extending its lead to 6-0.
Rodríguez capped the Mariners’ scoring with his 10th homer of the season in the top of the eighth inning. The 418-foot shot to left-center was his eighth homer in the month of May — tied for the most the 25-year-old has hit in any month in his big league career.
Gilbert (3-4) struck out six and allowed five hits while walking two. The 29-year-old right-hander threw 91 pitches, 54 for strikes. Eduard Bazardo and Cooper Criswell worked the final three innings in relief.
Jonah Heim scored the A’s lone run on a double-play groundout off the bat of Jeff McNeil in the bottom of the ninth.
Jeffrey Spring (3-6) gave up five runs on six hits in five innings for the Athletics, while striking out seven.
Seattle moved a half-game ahead of the Athletics in the division.
DIAMONDBACKS 3, GIANTS 2
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Mike Soroka limited San Francisco to two runs on four hits in six innings, Geraldo Perdomo broke a seventh-inning tie with a sacrifice fly and Arizona won for a three-game sweep.
Arizona has won five straight and 10 of 11. The Diamondbacks were 11-2 in a 13-game stretch against Colorado and San Francisco to improve to 31-24.
The Diamondbacks also swept a three-game series against the Giants last week in Phoenix. San Francisco has lost the first six games of a season series for the first time since dropping the first seven games to San Diego in 2010.
Soroka (7-2) gave up a two-run single to Luis Arraez with one out in the third inning. Soroka then retired the final 11 batters he faced. Paul Sewald finished for his 100th career save. He worked a three-up, three-down ninth for his 14th save this season.
The Diamondbacks trailed 2-0 in the sixth before scoring twice off Trevor McDonald (2-2) to tie tie it. Adrian Del Castillo drove in a run with a single, and Ildemaro Vargas’ sacrifice fly made it 2-2.
McDonald departed after allowing one-out singles to Tommy Troy and Ketel Marte in the seventh. Marte went 2 for 5 and extended his hitting streak to 11 games.
ORIOLES 11, RAYS 2
BALTIMORE (AP) — Blaze Alexander hit his first home run of the season and drove in six runs, Gunnar Henderson had his 12th and 13th homers and Baltimore routed Tampa to complete a three-game sweep.
Trey Gibson (1-0) allowed one run in 5 2/3 innings for his first victory the majors. The Orioles backed him with 16 hits.
Leody Taveras and Tyler O’Neill added RBIs to help the Orioles improve to 5-1 during a 10-game homestand. Adley Rutschman had three hits.
Rays left-hander Steven Matz (4-2) completed only three innings, allowing five of his season-high six runs during the first.
Tampa Bay had 10 hits but went 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position to lose its fourth straight. Ryan Vilade had the AL-leading Rays’ RBIs on a sixth-inning fielder’s choice and eighth-inning, bases-loaded walk.
Henderson’s two-run shot began Baltimore’s five-run first and Alexander’s two-run single completed it.
Henderson’s solo drive in the sixth off Jonathan Heasley completed this third career multi-homer game and Baltimore’s third this season. Alexander added a two-run drive off Heasley in the seventh.
TIGERS 4, ANGELS 0
DETROIT (AP) — Spencer Torkelson homered, doubled twice and drove in three runs, and five Detroit pitchers combined for a two-hitter as the Tigers snapped a season-worst seven-game home skid with a win over Los Angeles.
Despite winning two of their last three games, the struggling Tigers have lost nine of their last 11, 12 of 15 and 17 of their last 21. Detroit has lost six consecutive series for its longest such drought since 2021 and dropped eight of its last nine.
Drew Anderson (2-1) relieved Casey Mize to start the fifth and pitched three perfect innings with three strikeouts. Mize had six strikeouts, gave up two hits and walked one in four scoreless innings before leaving due to an undisclosed injury.
Kyle Finnegan pitched a 1-2-3 eighth before Kenley Jansen threw two-thirds of an inning and Brenan Hanifee recorded the final out.
Colt Keith, Kevin McGonigle and Dillon Dingler each had two hits for the Tigers.
José Soriano (6-4) allowed three runs and seven hits in five innings for the Angels, who had their season-best four-game win streak halted.
Jorge Soler and Donovan Walton accounted for the Angels hits with singles.

BOSTON (AP) — Connelly Early struck out seven in seven innings, Jarren Duran homered, and Boston beat Atlanta to snap a five-game losing streak.
Early (5-2) allowed four hits and walked three. Ryan Watson gave up one hit over the final two innings.
The Red Sox scored six runs in the fourth inning. Masataka Yoshida scored on a throwing error, Isiah Kiner-Falefa hit an RBI single, while Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu hit two-run singles.
Marcelo Mayer plated a run with a single in the seventh before Duran capped the night with his eighth home run of the year — a 400-foot shot to right field.
Duran finished 4 for 5 at the plate, and Rafaela went 3 of 5 with two RBIs and a run.
Bryce Elder (4-3) allowed six runs on nine hits while striking out one in 3 1/3 innings. Carlos Carrasco earned his 1,700th career strikeout in the seventh inning while throwing four innings and giving up two runs.
CUBS 10, PIRATES 4
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Ian Happ hit a tiebreaking three-run home run and drove in five runs on while playing in his hometown as Chicago ended its 10-game losing streak with a victory over Pittsburgh.
Happ’s three-run shot snapped a 4-4 tie and started a six-run inning that helped the Cubs get their . Pinch-hitter Michael Conforto hit a two-run home run later in the inning to extend the lead to 10-4.
Happ also hit a two-run single in the first inning to open the scoring and has reached base in each of his last 40 games in Pittsburgh. He was one of five Cubs with two hits.
Brandon Lowe hit a three-run homer for the Pirates and rookie Konnor Griffin had a solo blast that drew the Pittsburgh into a 4-4 tie in the fourth inning.
Chicago is just the second team in major league history to have two 10-game winning streaks and a 10-game losing streak in the same season, along with the 2017 Los Angeles Dodgers.
Jacob Webb (1-1) struck out the side in order in the sixth. Yohan Ramirez (2-2), who allowed Happ’s home run, was charged with four runs in 1/3 inning.
Neither starter factored in the decision as Cubs veteran Jameson Taillon and Pirates rookie Bubba Chandler both allowed four runs in five innings. Taillon has lost his four previous starts. Chandler has gone seven starts since his only win of the season.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Gerrit Cole struck out 10 while pitching into the seventh in a second stellar start since his return from Tommy John surgery, and New York beat Kansas City to run its winning streak to 14 straight over the Royals.
Cole (1-0) threw 79 pitches over 6 2/3 innings, allowing four hits without a walk. The superlative performance by the 35-year-old former Cy Young Award winner came after Cole had allowed two hits over in his first major league start since Game 5 of the 2024 World Series against the Dodgers.
Ben Rice had three RBIs, Ryan McMahon hit a two-run homer and Paul Goldschmidt and Aaron Judge also drove in runs, sending the Yankees to their second sweep of the Royals this season. New York has won 22 of its last 23 series against them overall.
Noah Cameron (2-4) pitched into the sixth inning for Kansas City, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk.

CHICAGO (AP) — Chase Meidroth hit his first career grand slam, David Sandlin struck four in six innings in his major league debut, and Chicago beat Minnesota.
Munetaka Murakami went 2 for 4 with a solo homer. His 20 home runs are tied with Gary Sánchez (New York Yankees, 2015-16) and Wally Berger (Boston Braves, 1930) for second in MLB history through 55 career games.
Cody Bellinger (Los Angeles Dodgers, 2017) hit 22 homers in his first 55 games.
Minnesota’s Byron Buxton homered to lead off the game, but the 25-year-old Sandlin retired 18 consecutive batters — the first White Sox pitcher to retire 18 in a row in his debut since 1920.
Minnesota’s Kody Clemens hit a solo shot in the eighth.
Sam Antonacci went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, Randal Grichuk had three hits and drove in two runs. Meidroth, Colson Montgomery and Tristan Peters each added two hits.
Murakami followed Meidroth’s slam with a home run to make it 14-2.

NEW YORK (AP) — Juan Soto homered again, Carson Benge provided two clutch singles and New York pieced together a 4-2 victory over Cincinnati that snapped a five-game losing streak.
Eric Wagaman also went deep in his first start for the last-place Mets (23-33), who prevented a three-game sweep and avoided falling a season-worst 12 games under .500.
New York mustered only six runs during the skid and had scored two or fewer in each of its previous six games.
Nathaniel Lowe and Sal Stewart each had an RBI single for the Reds (29-26), who stranded 17 runners against six Mets pitchers and finished 3 for 15 with men in scoring position. Rookie right-hander Jonah Tong (1-0) earned his third major league win after permitting just an unearned run over 3 2/3 innings in relief of opener Huascar Brazobán.
Brooks Raley and Luke Weaver each worked 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Devin Williams walked the bases loaded in the ninth before striking out Dane Myers and Blake Dunn for his eighth save.
Cincinnati had won three in a row and five of six.
Reds left-hander Andrew Abbott (4-3) allowed three runs — two earned — and five hits in six innings, dropping to 0-3 in five career outings against the Mets. He was 4-0 with a 1.29 ERA in his previous five starts overall.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Yordan Alvarez homered twice for the second consecutive game, including a tiebreaking solo shot in the eighth inning of Houston’s victory over Texas.
Alvarez’s fifth homer in three games put him at 20 on the same night Munetaka Murakami reached that number for the Chicago White Sox. Philadelphia slugger Kyle Schwarber leads the majors with 21.
Joc Pederson also had two solo homers for the Rangers, giving him six for the season, and finished with three hits and scored three times.
Pederson’s second long ball pulled Texas within a run in the eighth after the Astros went ahead 4-2 following Alvarez’s homer when Christian Walker scored from first on reliever Tyler Alexander’s throwing error on Taylor Trammell’s sacrifice bunt.
Alvarez went deep in back-to-back games for the first time in his eight big league seasons.
DODGERS 4, ROCKIES 1
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani homered and combined with two other pitchers for seven hitless innings before the Rockies broke up the no-hitter bid in the eighth in a 4-1 win over Colorado.
Ohtani’s 19 1/3-inning scoreless streak ended in the fourth when the right-hander allowed an earned run on Willi Castro’s groundout to second, raising his ERA to 0.82. Ohtani (5-2) earned his third consecutive victory.
He has yet to give up more than two runs in any of his nine starts this season. Ohtani has given up one or no earned runs in eight of his nine starts.
Tanner Scott took over to start the eighth and allowed a two-out single to right by Tyler Freeman after Ohtani and Will Klein combined for seven hitless innings.
Klein started the seventh and retired the side, helped by an inning-ending double play.
Kyle Hurt pitched the ninth to earn his first major league save.
Ohtani struck out seven and walked four. The right-hander left the game after throwing 99 pitches, 56 for strikes.
