Cuban shortstop Luis León has agreed to a deal with the Miami Marlins, according to Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com.

He is the younger brother of Houston Astros outfielder Pedro Leon, who made his Major League Baseball debut in 2024.

Leon participated in a showcase held in Florida in June 2023, with 20 MLB organizations present. The top teams who emerged as front runners were the Marlins and the St. Louis Cardinals.

At the showcase Leon impressed in the 60-yard dash, recording a 6.2 second time. He has the ability to hit to all areas on the field, with a chance to develop power to all areas. He also displayed strong defense at shortstop, with a plus-strength arm.

He had originally agreed to a deal with the St. Louis Cardinals, Romero reported, for a bonus of around $850,000. The deal had fallen through and Leon was be declared an international free agent in January 2024 by the MLB Commissioner’s Office.

Leon’s deal with the Marlins is expected to become official in a few weeks, and he will receive a $1.5 million signing bonus, becoming the highest paid international signing in Marlins franchise history.
