Czechia and Korea to Meet in Pre-WBC Friendly Series in November

Baseball fans around the world will get an early taste of the 2026 World Baseball Classic this November, as Czechia and South Korea are scheduled to face off in a two-game friendly series at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul, South Korea, on November 8 and 9.

The series will serve as an important tune-up for both national teams, particularly as they gear up for what is shaping up to be the most competitive WBC tournament yet. It also promises to offer valuable insight into the rosters and strategies each team could employ when the WBC kicks off next March.

An Early Glimpse of Pool C Showdown

Interestingly, this friendly series isn’t just a warm-up—it’s a preview. Czechia and South Korea will open their 2026 WBC campaigns against each other on March 5 in Tokyo, making these November games a rare opportunity to test strategies and scout direct competition months before the actual tournament begins.

Both teams will compete in Pool C, potentially the toughest group in the 2026 WBC. The pool includes the defending champions Japan, perennial powerhouse Australia, who stunned South Korea in the 2023 edition, and Taiwan, a talented and fast-rising baseball nation.

Czechia’s Growth Continues Through Asian Tours

For Czechia, these friendlies mark the continuation of a growing international presence and a focused investment in development. The Czech national team, still relatively new to elite-level global competition, made headlines with a gutsy and charismatic performance at the 2023 World Baseball Classic. They earned global respect with their discipline, team chemistry, and the improbable nature of their rise—many players held full-time jobs as firefighters, engineers, or teachers while trying to compete against the world’s best.

Now, Czechia is building on that momentum. After facing Japan in Tokyo and Taiwan in Taipei City last year, the team will now test itself against South Korea, rounding out a trio of games against the top three Asian national programs.

While the Czech roster for the November series is expected to lean young, several core players projected to feature in the 2026 WBC will be in uniform. These games will serve as a vital opportunity to evaluate talent, integrate prospects, and continue the national program’s evolution on the global stage.

South Korea Eyes Redemption After Recent Struggles

For South Korea, the friendly series is equally important, if not more so. Despite a proud baseball tradition and deep pool of talent, Korea has not advanced beyond the first round of the World Baseball Classic since 2009. In 2023, they were eliminated early once again—this time due to a shocking opening game loss to Australia, a result that set the tone for a disappointing tournament.

Korean fans and officials are hoping that 2026 will mark a turning point. The November friendlies are the first of two key series for Korea, with a second set scheduled later that month in Tokyo against Samurai Japan, their longtime regional rivals.

While MLB players will not be available for the friendly against Czechia due to offseason schedules, the top stars of the KBO League will suit up. That includes players expected to be in the 2026 WBC roster conversation, making the series an important showcase for Korea’s next generation of national talent. The coaching staff will be watching closely to evaluate performance under international pressure and home crowd expectations.

More Than Just a Tune-Up.

Moreover, with these nations opening WBC play against each other in Tokyo next March, this November series adds an element of tactical intrigue with players on both sides expected to make the final roster for each next March.

For fans in Seoul, this is an opportunity to see the Korean national team on home soil as part of the K-Baseball Series. Last year Korea hosted Cuba and will now host one of the top European teams.

Looking Ahead to March

When the 2026 WBC begins in earnest, Czechia and South Korea will be among the five teams competing in Pool C, alongside Japan, Australia, and Taiwan. With only two teams advancing from each group, every game will carry weight, and the Czech–Korea opener could set the tone for both nations’ tournament fate.

For now, the focus turns to Seoul this November. Two games. Two countries with something to prove. And one shared goal: building a roster ready to compete on baseball’s biggest global stage
