Born in Redlands, California, Straily, 36, was drafted in the 24th round by the Oakland Athletics in 2009 out of Marshall University. He made his MLB debut in 2012 and appeared in 156 games across 140 starts over eight seasons with the Athletics, Cubs, Astros, Reds, Marlins, and Orioles.
Straily posted a career MLB record of 44-40 with a 4.56 ERA and 681 strikeouts across 803.1 innings. His best season came in 2016 with the Cincinnati Reds, when he led the club in innings pitched with 191.1 and finished 14-8 with a 3.76 ERA despite allowing 31 home runs. He ranked among the National League leaders in starts and batters faced that year.
Straily was traded to Miami ahead of the 2017 season in a deal that sent right-hander Luis Castillo to Cincinnati, a move that grew infamous as Castillo developed into a frontline starter and three-time All-Star.

Internationally, Straily made a significant impact in the KBO League with the Lotte Giants from 2020-23, where he compiled a 3.29 ERA in 503 innings and became one of the most consistent foreign pitchers in the league. His KBO debut season in 2020 was dominant, finishing with 205 strikeouts and a 2.50 ERA over 31 starts.
Straily also pitched for the Diablos Rojos del Mexico in 2025, making five starts and closing out his career with 32 innings in Liga Mexicana de Beisbol.
Over his entire professional career—including MLB, minor leagues, KBO, and LMB—Straily totaled more than 2,350 innings pitched. He was known for his tenacity, adaptability, and understanding of pitch sequencing, helping younger pitchers navigate data-driven analytics during the latter part of his career.
World Baseball Network congratulates Dan Straily on his career and wishes him success in his post-playing journey.
