David Ortiz Jr., 17, the son of MLB Hall of Famer David Ortiz, is also a left-handed hitting first baseman. He picked up his first career hit in the Texas Rangers organization with their Dominican Summer League team on June 5 against the Philadelphia Phillies DSL team.
Ortiz Jr. hit a single against right-handed pitcher Yordy Magdariaga in the fifth and he went 1-for-3 with a walk in the game. He has one hit in seven at-bats this season.
Ortiz signed with the Rangers last summer for a signing bonus of $225,000 out of the Dominican Republic. He joins Vladimir Guerrero’s son, Pablo Guerrero, as a player with a Hall of Fame father in the Rangers organization.
DSL Roundup – The Baltimore Orioles DSL team and San Francisco Giants have the best record at 5-0. The Colorado Rockies DSL team is also undefeated at 4-0 in the Southeast Division.
Almen Tolentino, 18, a catcher on the Marlins DSL team, leads the DSL with four home runs.
Ortiz Jr.’s teammate outfielder Elorky Rodriguez, 17, leads the DSL with 11 RBIs. Rodriguez is the Rangers’ 20th-ranked prospect on MLB Pipeline.com. Outfielder Marco Argudin, 19, is also on the DSL Rangers and he leads the DSL with 11 hits and a .647 batting average in 17 at-bats.
Mets DSL outfielder Heriberto Rincon, 19, leads the DSL with six stolen bases.
When it comes to pitching, Houston Astros right-handed pitcher Adrian Ardines, 18, leads the DSL with 12 strikeouts. He has an ERA of 2.57 in 7 1/3 innings this season. Six pitchers are tied for the league lead in saves with two.
The DSL season opened on June 2 and the regular season will end on August 19. The playoffs were expanded from eight teams to 16 teams for the first time this season.
