Detroit Tigers’ outfield prospect Max Clark was the best baseball player in the state of Indiana for three straight seasons at Franklin Community High School.
In 2023, he won the Gatorade Player of the Year, which is awarded across all sports, and counts LeBron James as a previous winner.
Clark is the Tigers’ No. 2-ranked prospect and is 10th in MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 Rankings, and will be watching Team USA during the 2026 World Baseball Classic with an eye on representing his country later in his career.
“We love Max. I mean, that, you know, he’s clearly established himself as, um, somebody that’s, I’m really excited for and, um, has a ton of talent and, uh, a ton of confidence. So, you know, day by day, he’s going to learn a lot in this camp and being around all of our guys and our coaches, and he’s not afraid,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch told World Baseball Network on Feb. 22 at spring training.
Clark was invited to the Tigers’ spring training as a non-roster invitee for the first time this spring and so far has lived up to the billing of being the third overall selection in the 2023 MLB Draft. Now 21, Clark played with Team USA at the U18 level and with his teammate Tigers shortstop prospect Kevin McGonigle.
“I’ve known Max since I was 15 and we got the opportunity at U18 to go out there and compete and we won gold. That group was unbelievable and I keep in touch with a lot of them,” McGonigle told World Baseball Network. “Max is a great competitor and I’m really happy that we can push each other to improve consistently.”
McGonigle was in the same draft class as Clark and was picked with the 37th overall by the Tigers. McGonigle is the Tigers’ top prospect and he is second on MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 Rankings.
The pair played for Team USA at the WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup in Sarasota and Bradenton, Florida, where they helped the USA beat Chinese Taipei 5–1 in the Gold Medal game at Ed Smith Stadium.
“There’s no better feeling than being up on the podium with a gold medal around your neck and your national anthem playing. I’ll tell you that,” Clark told World Baseball Network.
Clark’s also excited to watch the 2026 World Baseball Classic, which will feature 10 of his Tigers teammates.
“I mean, there’s nothing better than representing your country. You know, all the guys that are getting ready to go off the WBC, like that’s on my bucket list for sure,” Clark said.
Clark will be locked into every pitch of the WBC cheering on Team USA, and his teammates.
He made it to Double-A Erie last season on July 7, 2025, when he was promoted from High-A West Michigan. Clark saw a power spike in Double-A and had his best season as a pro.
He hit seven home runs in 171 at-bats with Erie compared to seven home runs in 260 at-bats with West Michigan.
“I definitely felt like last year was a good step forward. Obviously, there’s still work to be done. I worked on lifting the ball. And it got better once I got to Double-A, which was cool to see,” Clark, who had had 14 home runs, 67 RBIs, 19 stolen bases, and a slash line of .271/.403/.432 in 431 at-bats in High-A and Double-A, said. “Obviously, as the level goes up, and you continue to put the ball in the air a little bit better.”
Clark attributed that to being more aggressive early in the count, hunting fastballs, and avoiding secondary pitches.
He is a well-rounded player and he uses his speed to his advantage on the bases and defensively.
“I think a lot of it is the effort, obviously, speed, and defense don’t slump. all about effort. And then on those days where you are swinging it pretty well, it makes the other stuff come pretty easily. So, you know, just callous hours in the offseason, continue to work, continuing to grind,” Clark said.
When it comes to the Tigers’ decision-making, Clark is focused on putting his best foot forward and letting the chips fall where they may.
The Tigers have a loaded outfield group, but MLB Pipeline is projecting that Clark will make his MLB debut at some point this season.
