Diamondbacks Sign Trevor Richards and Anthony Gose to MiLB Deals

Since June 17, the Arizona Diamondbacks have made several notable moves regarding their Triple-A affiliate, the Reno Aces. The team has signed relief pitchers Anthony Gose and Trevor Richards to Minor League contracts. The Diamondbacks also promoted catcher Gavin Logan to Reno.

Gose signed with the Diamondbacks on June 17, after being released from his Minor League contract with the New York Mets on June 16. He spent last season with the Cleveland Guardians, splitting time between the major leagues and Triple-A. He struggled in 4 1/3 innings of work, posting a 10.38 ERA in his first major league action since 2022.

Gose missed the entire 2023 season due to injury. That followed his second season as a major league pitcher in 2022, when he found a role in the Guardians’ bullpen as a hard-throwing, left-handed reliever. Before converting to a pitcher, Gose was an outfielder for the Toronto Blue Jays and Detroit Tigers from 2012 to 2016. Unable to find his footing after being sent down to the minor leagues, Gose decided to try his luck at pitching.

After making the switch in 2017, Gose pitched in the minors with the Texas Rangers before working his way up the Cleveland organization. He made his major league pitching debut in 2021, striking out nine batters and posting a 1.35 ERA in 6 2/3 innings. He now finds himself in another organization and is looking to pitch for his second major league team.

Richards signed with the Diamondbacks on the evening of June 19. He is an eight-year major league veteran who has pitched for six different teams. He has spent most of his career as a bullpen piece for the Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays. Since 2021, when Richards had a 3.50 ERA between the Rays, Blue Jays and Milwaukee Brewers, he has bounced around several organizations.

Gavin Logan was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the ninth round of the 2022 MLB draft after a decorated college career at Oregon State. The catcher from Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, has shown flashes of production in the minors and will now make the jump from High-A directly to Triple-A. The 25-year-old left-handed catcher could see some time in the majors this season as a September call-up, especially considering the Diamondbacks’ lack of depth at catcher with Gabriel Moreno out, if he produces in Reno.

The Diamondbacks’ bullpen has struggled this year, ranking 30th in the major leagues in bullpen ERA at 5.42. Their offense and starting rotation have kept them competitive despite the bullpen’s woes, as they currently are 37-37. Gose and Richards could be promoted soon if injuries or other roster moves require changes.

Rumors have been swirling about what the Diamondbacks will do at the trade deadline. They have several talented players they could move if they decide to sell, including those on expiring or inexpensive contracts. However, if they go on a run over the next month, they could hold or even buy, given the talent of the roster and the playoff experience the team gained during its postseason run in 2022. The Diamondbacks are currently in fourth place in the National League West, eight games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers.
