Jordan Lawlar, the Diamondbacks’ top prospect, will spend his winter in the Dominican League (LIDOM), signing with Tigres Del Licey for the 2024-25 season.
The 20-year-old has yet to appear in any big-league action in 2024 due to a string of injuries ranging from a torn ligament in his thumb to a lower-body injury hurt in a rehab game.
However, he may return to the MLB soon. He appeared in game action on September 8 for the first time in over two months.
“We are happy to sign a player who will impact our team well. He is an experienced and versatile player who will help us in the middle of the infield. His ability to steal bases, know the strike zone and plate discipline are indicators of an element that will help us build out our roster,” Audo Vicente, VP of Operations and general manager of Tigres, said to LIDOM.com.
Lawlar, the 6th overall selection in the 2021 draft, burgeoned through the minor leagues, slashing .358/.438/.612 over 16 games at the Triple-A level before a promotion late last season.
He then appeared in 14 total big-league games, hitting just .129, but appeared in the World Series and the Diamondbacks’ playoff run as a defensive replacement and pinch-runner.
Signing with Tigres will provide Lawlar ample opportunity to see high-quality competition and get at-bats in preparation for a full 2025 season.
The middle-infielder will slot in at the top of Tigres’ lineup and look to help Tigres improve from a 25-25 record a year ago.
