Dominic Smith’s walk-off grand slam caps Braves’ 6-run ninth vs Royals

ATLANTA (AP) — Dominic Smith hit a walk-off grand slam and the Atlanta Braves stunned the Kansas City Royals with a six-run ninth inning in a 6-2 victory on Saturday night.

Smith hit a 3-2 pitch from Carlos Estévez (0-1) over the right field wall as the Braves won for the second straight night.

Osvaldo Bido (1-0) picked up the win in his Braves debut after striking out all three batters in the ninth inning.

Michael Harris II was 3 for 4 with an RBI, and Mike Yastrzemski was 2 for 4 with an RBI.

The Braves trailed 2-0 entering the ninth, but Yastrzemski and Harris had RBI singles to tie it before Smith ended it with his home run.

Michael Wacha threw six shutout innings, and Salvador Perez hit a home run for the Royals.

Wacha was dominant, giving up just three hits and a walk. He twice induced double-plays and had seven strikeouts. Fifty-seven of his 80 pitches were strikes.

Vinnie Pasquantino had an RBI, and Jac Caglianone was 2 for 3 for the Royals.

CUBS 10, NATIONALS 2

CHICAGO (AP) — Cade Horton threw four-hit ball into the seventh inning, Ian Happ broke the game open with a three-run homer in the sixth inning and Chicago routed Washington.

Miguel Amaya homered and finished with two hits and two RBIs, and Pete Crow-Armstrong added two hits. Nico Hoerner, Matt Shaw and Carson Kelly drove in runs as the Cubs avenged .

Horton (1-0), the runner-up in the 2025 NL Rookie of the Year race, retired the first nine batters he faced before James Wood led off the fourth with a solo homer. The 24-year-old right-hander was charged with two runs in 6 1/3 innings, with four strikeouts and a walk.

Three Chicago relievers followed Horton and didn’t allow a hit.

Washington shortstop CJ Abrams missed the game due to a death in the family. Replacement Nasim Nuñez singled in a run.

Miles Mikolas (0-1) allowed six runs, four earned, on seven hits in five innings in his first start for the Nationals after signing as a free agent.

CARDINALS 6, RAYS 5, 10 INNINGS

ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis rookie JJ Wetherholt lined a two-run, 10th-inning single after Michael McGreevy tossed six hitless innings to help St. Louis beat Tampa Bay.

Wetherholt, the seventh pick of the 2024 MLB amateur draft, lined a single to right field off Griffin Jax (0-1) in his second career game.

Jax walked Jordan Walker on four pitches to start the bottom of the 10th, and Victor Scott II laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Walker and automatic runner Nathan Church into scoring position.

McGreevy walked two and struck out five batters before departing after throwing 96 pitches.

Yandy Díaz singled up the middle off former Rays reliever Ryne Stanek (1-0) to leadoff the top of the 10th to give Tampa Bay a 5-4 lead.

Carson Williams lined a two-run single to left field off Stanek, and Nick Fortes stroked a single to right field to drive in Williams and cap a four-run ninth inning and tie the game.

BLUE JAYS 8, ATHLETICS 7, 11 INNINGS

TORONTO (AP) — Ernie Clement singled home the winning run in the 11th inning and Toronto rallied to beat the Athletics.

Clement won it with off Luis Medina (0-1), scoring Nathan Lukes for Toronto’s second-straight walk-off win.

Toronto rookie Spencer Miles (1-0) pitched a scoreless top of the 11th to win his major league debut.

Blue Jays catcher Alejandro Kirk hit a game-tying homer off Michael Kelly in the bottom of the ninth, Toronto’s first home run of the season.

Brent Rooker’s two-out single in the top of the 10th gave the A’s a 7-6 lead, but Addison Barger tied it with a sacrifice fly in the bottom half.

Shea Langeliers hit his third career grand slam but it wasn’t enough for the Athletics, who couldn’t make a 6-2 lead stand up.

Langeliers, who homered twice in , went 2 for 4 with a walk.

TWINS 4, ORIOLES 1

BALTIMORE (AP) — Royce Lewis hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the fifth inning, and Minnesota used a strong effort from its bullpen to beat Baltimore.

Lewis connected off Kyle Bradish (0-1) after a leadoff walk to Trevor Larnach. The drive, which soared just inside the left-field foul pole, gave Minnesota its first lead of the season following Thursday.

Kody Clemens added an RBI single in the seventh to help the Twins earn their first win for manager Derek Shelton, who was hired to turn around a team that went 70-92 last year.

Minnesota starter Taj Bradley struck out nine over 4 1/3 innings, but was yanked after throwing 92 pitches.

Five relievers followed, all of them effective. Anthony Banda (1-0) finished the fifth inning, Kody Funderburk got two outs in the sixth and Eric Orze took it through the seventh.

Justin Topa worked the eighth and Cole Sands got the next three outs for his first save.

The Twins managed only four hits and Baltimore had five, just one for extra bases.

RANGERS 5, PHILLIES 4, 10 INNINGS

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jake Burger and Corey Seager each homered and Texas recovered from blowing a three-run lead in the ninth inning to beat Philadelphia in 10 innings.

The Phillies nearly tied it again in the 10th.

Bryce Harper snapped an 0 for 8 start to the season with a broken-bat, two-out single to right off Tyler Alexander that made it 5-4. Alec Bohm popped up against Alexander, who earned the save, to end the game.

Wyatt Langford singled off Phillies closer Jhoan Duran to open the 10th that sent the automatic runner to third. Duran (0-1) uncorked a wild pitch that scored Brandon Nimmo and allowed an RBI single to Andrew McCutchen for a 5-3 lead.

Chris Martin (1-0) got one out in the ninth for the win.

The Phillies tied the game with three unearned runs in the ninth aided by Burger’s second error of the game at first base.

With two outs, the Phillies put two runners on and chased reliever Robert Garcia. Martin’s first pitch to former Ranger Adolis Garcia was popped into foul territory and dropped by Burger. Garcia took advantage of his second chance and ripped an RBI double to left. Brandon Marsh followed with a two-RBI single to right that tied the game at 3-all.

REDS 6, RED SOX 5, 11 INNINGS

CINCINNATI (AP) — Dane Myers’ single to left in the 11th inning scored designated runner TJ Friedl from third as Cincinnati defeated Boston.

Myers’ third career game-ending hit came off Justin Slaten (0-1). Connor Phillips (1-0) got the win for Cincinnati.

The Reds led 4-1 after three innings before the Red Sox rallied. Wilyer Abreu hit a solo homer with two out in the ninth inning off Reds closer Emilio Pagán to tie the score at 5.

Sal Stewart and Elly De La Cruz each hit solo homers for the Reds. Trevor Story homered for Boston.

Sonny Gray had a rough Red Sox debut, allowing four runs, three earned, in four innings. He walked one and fanned five on 80 pitches.

Brady Singer allowed three runs on five hits in four innings in his season debut for the Reds. Singer left his final spring training start with a blister on his right index finger, but reported no issues Saturday.

MARLINS 4, ROCKIES 3

MIAMI (AP) — Owen Caissie had three hits, including a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning and Miami beat Colorado.

Liam Hicks homered and drove in three runs, while Agustin Ramirez singled twice and walked for the Marlins.

Otto Lopez, who was hitless in first seven at-bats of the season, singled against Rockies reliever Jaden Hill (0-1) to start the eighth. López stole second and raced home when Caissie hit a line drive to centerfield.

Calvin Faucher (1-0) pitched a scoreless eighth and Pete Fairbanks closed with a perfect ninth for his second save.

Hicks hit a two-run homer in the fifth that chased Colorado starter Michael Lorenzen and tied it at 3-all.

Pitching for his sixth club in 12 seasons, Lorenzen allowed seven hits, struck out four and hit two batters over 4 1/3 innings. The 34-year-old Lorenzen signed a free-agent deal with Colorado in the offseason.

Marlins starter Eury Pérez struck out eight in seven innings of three-run ball. Pérez gave up five hits and walked one.

METS 4, PIRATES 2, 11 INNINGS

NEW YORK (AP) — Luis Robert Jr. hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the 11th inning to give New York a victory over Pittsburgh.

Luis Torrens delivered a tying single in the 10th on his first swing this season, and the Mets improved to 2-0 following over Paul Skenes and the Pirates in their opener.

After starters Mitch Keller and David Peterson matched zeros in 42-degree weather, Nick Gonzales lined an RBI single for Pittsburgh with one out in the 10th to break a scoreless tie.

Mets reliever Luis Garcia prevented further damage by retiring Jake Mangum with the bases loaded.

Bryan Reynolds put the Pirates ahead again with a two-out infield single in the 11th before Richard Lovelady (1-0) struck out Gonzales with runners at the corners.

Jorge Polanco worked a leadoff walk in the bottom half from rookie left-hander Hunter Barco (0-1), who pitched out of a huge jam in the 10th to extend the game in his third major league appearance.

With automatic runner Bo Bichette also aboard at second, Robert reached down and drove a 1-0 slider over the left-center fence for his first homer with the Mets. The center fielder from Cuba, acquired from the Chicago White Sox in a January trade, also had two RBI singles Thursday in his New York debut.

YANKEES 3, GIANTS 1

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — for a second straight day to nearly the same left-field spot, Ben Rice hit a two-run double in the third inning, and New York beat San Francisco for a three-game sweep.

Rice put New York ahead in the third against right-hander Tyler Mahle (0-1), done after four innings in his San Francisco debut.

Jake Bird (1-0) pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief and David Bednar finished for his second save after surrendering two straight singles to start the inning before getting Patrick Bailey to ground into a game-ending double play.

ASTROS 11, ANGELS 9

HOUSTON (AP) — Carlos Correa and Isaac Paredes drove in two runs apiece and sparked an eight-run sixth inning for Houston in a victory over Los Angeles.

Trailing 6-4, the Astros tied the game on a single by Correa and a throwing error by Angels catcher Logan O’Hoppe. Houston took a lead on a single from Christian Walker.

The Astros tagged Angels reliever Walbert Ureña (0-1) for six runs on four hits in one inning.

Houston blew it open off a two-run single by Yainer Diaz and a two-run double off the right field wall from Jake Meyers to make it 11-6. The eight runs is the most scored in the sixth inning by Houston since scoring 10 against the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 4.

An Angels bullpen that had registered 7 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball to start the season gave up eight runs between Ureña and Joey Lucchesi in the sixth inning alone.

Houston trailed 6-0 in the fifth, but a two-run double by Paredes chased Angels starter Reid Detmers.

Detmers, who was making his first regular-season start since Sept. 27, 2024, gave up three runs on six hits and struck out nine in 4 2/3 innings.

BREWERS 6, WHITE SOX 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Garrett Mitchell hit two singles, drove in two runs and stole two bases on Saturday night to help Milwaukee beat Chicago despite another home run by Munetaka Murakami.

Christian Yelich had three hits and his RBI single opened the scoring in Milwaukee’s three-run first inning. Brice Turang also had three hits, which included two doubles, Joey Ortiz had two hits and drove in a run and Brandon Lockridge had an RBI single.

Yelich moved to third on a base hit by Jake Bauers before Mitchell hit a two-run single to center that made it 3-0. Brewers Sean Burke (0-1) fielded Yelich’s checked-swing dribbler in the second and threw wildly to first. Turang raced home on play to give Milwaukee a four-run lead.

Murakami homered off starter Chad Patrick to lead off the fourth inning. The Japanese slugger, who signed a two-year $34-million after playing eight seasons (2018-2025) with the Yakult Swallows of the Nippon Professional Baseball League, made his debut Thursday in the opener, a loss, and hit a solo shot.

Lockridge’s base hit in the sixth and Ortiz’s single in the seventh put insurance runs on the board.

Aaron Ashby (1-0) struck out four of the seven batters he faced in relief of Patrick, who went 4 1/3 innings and allowed a run.

PADRES 3, TIGERS 0

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Randy Vásquez and two relievers combined for a two-hitter, and Fernando Tatis Jr. hit an RBI single and his stolen base led to another run as San Diego beat Detroit to avoid a three-game sweep.

Vásquez (1-0) struck out eight and allowed two hits — a single and double by Colt Keith — in six innings, with three walks. Kyle Hart struck out three in two perfect innings and Mason Miller, who took over as closer after Robert Suarez signed as a free agent with Atlanta, walked one and struck out two in the ninth for the save in his season debut.

The Padres got to Jack Flaherty (0-1) in the third and fifth innings, getting enough offense to avoid being swept in their opening series for the first time since 2018 against Milwaukee.

San Diego had three straight two-out singles in the third, with Tatis’ base hit to right bringing in Freddy Fermin. Tatis, dropped from the leadoff spot after the first two games to No. 2, stole second. Second baseman Gleyber Torres couldn’t handle the throw from catcher Jake Rogers and the ball skipped into center field for an error, allowing Jake Cronenworth to score.

DODGERS 3, DIAMONDBACKS 2

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Will Smith hit a go-ahead, two-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning Saturday on his 31st birthday, lifting Los Angeles to a win over Arizona and a season-opening three-game sweep.

Smith began his bobblehead night going 0-for-3. After Mookie Betts walked, Smith sent a 2-2 pitch from reliever Juan Morillo (0-1) over the wall in centerfield, giving the Dodgers a 3-2 lead.

Edwin Diaz retired the side on three consecutive flyballs in the ninth to earn his second consecutive save. He again trotted out to trumpeter Tatiana Tate blaring his entrance music “Narco” from the left field stands near the bullpen. Fans were on their feet bopping along.

Will Klein (0-1) got the win in relief, allowing a run and striking out one in the eighth.

Dodgers starter Tyler Glasnow gave up two runs and four hits in six innings and struck out six in his season debut.

GUARDIANS 6, MARINERS 5, 10 INNINGS

SEATTLE (AP) — Rookie outfielder Chase DeLauter hit his fourth career home run to give Cleveland the lead for good in the 10th inning in a win over Seattle.

DeLauter, who Thursday became the fifth player in the franchise’s 126-year history to in his first career regular-season at-bat, extended his arms on an elevated fastball from Mariners closer Andrés Muñoz (0-1) and deposited it beyond the left-field wall at T-Mobile Park for a two-run home run that made it 6-3.

DeLauter became the third player in major league history to hit a home run in each of his first three games, joining Seattle’s Kyle Lewis (2019) and Colorado’s Trevor Story (four straight in 2016).

Julio Rodríguez hit a two-out, two-strike RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning off Cade Smith (1-0) that made it 3-3.

Luke Raley homered for the third consecutive game, a two-run shot in the bottom of the 10th. Connor Brogdon, who came on to start the inning, struck out Leo Rivas and Cole Young to end it and earned his first save of the season.

Mariners starter Bryan Woo threw five scoreless innings before Cleveland pushed two runs across in the sixth, first on an RBI double by José Ramírez and then on an run-scoring single by Kyle Manzardo.

Ramírez joined Tris Speaker (486) and Nap Lajoie (424) as the only players with 400 or more doubles in Cleveland’s 126-year franchise history.
