World Baseball Network is taking a way too early look at what some squads could look like for the World Baseball Classic (WBC). Today, we look at what a potential lineup could look like for Mexico.

  1. Marcelo Mayer SS
  2. Jarren Duran CF
  3. Randy Arozarena DH
  4. Joey Meneses 1B
  5. Isaac Paredes 3B
  6. Alejandro Kirk C
  7. Alex Verdugo LF
  8. Luis Urias 2B
  9. Alek Thomas RF

Mexico fared well during the 2023 World Baseball Classic, finishing third before losing in the semifinals to Japan. They will look to become stronger in 2026 with the addition of Marcelo Mayer, who could enter the starting lineup. Both of Mayer’s parents were born in Nogales Municipality, Sonora, Mexico. Some players who could join Mexico in the lineup or on the bench are Austin Barnes, Jonathan Aranda, Rowdy Tellez, Alan Trejo, Ramon Urias, Alonso Gaitan, and Alejo Lopez.

Their rotation also looks to be one of the best in the entire tournament. They will likely turn to Patrick Sandoval to anchor the rotation once again after dominating the competition in 2023. Other suitors for the rotation include Javier Assad, Jose Urquidy, Valente Bellozo, Adrian Martinez, Manny Bañuelos, and Taijuan Walker.

As for their bullpen, one player who was not featured on Mexico’s 2023 team but could be the top candidate for saves is Andres Muñoz. He appeared in his first All-Star Game this past 2024, with 22 saves in 60 appearances, posting a 2.12 ERA. If Muñoz doesn’t join for 2026, other options include Daniel Duarte, Manuel Rodriguez, Victor Gonzalez, Gerardo Reyes, and Giovanny Gallegos.

The 2026 World Baseball Classic will begin on March 5 and run until March 17. Mexico will be part of Pool B, where they will face the United States, Italy, and Great Britain. Pool B will be played at Daikin Park in Houston, Texas.
