As we enter 2025, we are one year away from the sixth edition of the World Baseball Classic (WBC). With 16 teams already qualified for the action in about a year from now, here is a way-too-early look at what some of the squads could look like for the global battle. Today, we look at what a potential lineup could look like for Venezuela.
Venezuela always has a very talented squad, as most players from their 2023 team would be back in the starting lineup for 2026. Jackson Chourio would participate in his first World Baseball Classic, as he made his debut this past 2024 season and finished third runner-up in National League Rookie of the Year voting. Other players looking to get into Venezuela’s lineup will be Gleyber Torres, Andres Gimenez, Luisangel Acuña, Wilyer Abreu, and Francisco Alvarez.
As for their rotation, Venezuela rolled out a strong rotation in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, led by pitchers Pablo Lopez, Ranger Suarez, Eduardo Rodriguez, Jesus Luzardo, and Martin Perez. One starter who could get a look to join the team in 2026 is Detroit Tigers Keider Montero. Montero pitched in 19 games in 2024, making 16 starts, going 6-6, recording a 4.76 ERA, tossing one complete-game shutout, and striking out 77 batters across 98.1 innings pitched.
The bullpen could be what helps Venezuela remain competitive throughout the entirety of the World Baseball Classic. Jose Alvarado could be the favorite to serve as their closing pitcher, as he was part of the 2023 team. Jose Quijada and Carlos Hernandez were also both of value in Venezuela’s run in 2023. Still, some names who could join them in the backend of the bullpen could be Brusdar Graterol, Jose Butto, Robert Suarez, and Edgardo Henriquez.
The 2026 World Baseball Classic will begin on March 5 and run until March 17. Venezuela will be part of Pool D, facing the Dominican Republic, the Netherlands, and Israel depending on how the qualifiers play out. Pool D will be played at loanDepot Park in Miami, Florida.
