In 2023, the Miami Marlins’ ace Sandy Alcántara pitched for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic. Next year, another Marlins right-hander is ready to represent his country.

Edward Cabrera has expressed interest in pitching in the 2026 World Baseball Classic. Cabrera told Yardona Carmona that he wants to pitch for the Dominican Republic after throwing seven scoreless innings to help the Marlins secure their eighth straight win. He is having a great season and would be a great addition to the team.

His teammate and former National League Cy Young Award winner, Alcántara, has also made himself available for the 2026 World Baseball Classic, according to MLB.com’s Kevin Barral.

Cabrera has a 3.41 ERA on the season. However, since the calendar flipped to May, he has a 2.05 ERA and the Marlins have lost just three of his 10 starts in that span. He is in his fifth big league season and has a 4.14 career ERA. This could end up being a career year for the young pitcher.

The Dominican Republic is assigned to Pool D with Venezuela, the Netherlands, Israel and Nicaragua, which will play at loanDepot Park in Miami, meaning Cabrera would be representing his country at his home ballpark should he make the Dominican roster.
