The Arizona Diamondbacks lost their Saturday night game against the Atlanta Braves 8-7 despite a historic night from Eugenio Suárez. Suárez went 4-for-4 with four home runs, becoming the first Venezuelan player to hit four home runs in a game.
Suárez’s four home run game was the 19th in MLB history and the first since J.D. Martinez did it in 2017. Martinez was also playing for the Diamondbacks at the time. However, it was just the second time in modern history that a team got a four-home run performance and lost. The previous instance was in 1986, when Bob Horner hit four home runs in a loss to the Washington Expos. Ed Delahanty also had a four-home run game where the Phillies lost 9-8 to the Chicago Colts in 1896.
The Braves won the game on a wild pitch in the tenth inning, but manager Brian Snitker acknowledged how great a game that Suárez played.
“We couldn’t get him out,” Snitker told reporters after the game, according to MLB.com. “Thank God, we won the game in spite of that great night that he had.”
Suárez has now hit 10 home runs this season, leading MLB. He had three solo home runs and one two-run home run. His two-run home run came in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game at seven apiece.
