FIRED! José Leger Out As Manager of Gigantes del Cibao After Three Round Robin Games

A stunning shakeup took place in the midst of the LIDOM Round Robin with the Gigantes del Cibao. They have gotten off to a 0-3 start and fired their manager, José Leger, on Dec. 29, according to a press release on the Gigantes del Cibao’s X account. ]

The interim manager will be Jefry Sierra. They also fired their bench coach, Felipe Rojas, and Kremlin Martínez will be the new bench coach.

The Gigantes del Cibao lost their first game of the round robin, 11-3 to the Toros del Este on Dec. 27. Their second game was a heartbreaking 10-6 loss in 10 innings to the Àguilas Cibaeñas on Dec. 28. The result that sealed Leger’s fate was a 4-2 loss against the Leones del Escogido on Dec. 29.

The Gigantes del Cibao added Adisyn Coffey as a reinforcement to help their pitching staff on Dec. 30.

Coffey spent this past season with the Chicago White Sox with their Double-A and Triple-A affiliates. Coffey, 26, pitched 55 ⅓ innings combined at both levels with 75 strikeouts and an ERA of 6.02. He was a third-round pick in the MLB Draft by the Chicago White Sox in 2020.

Coffey will try to help the Gigantes del Cibao chip away at their deficit in the round robin. With 15 games remaining, they trail the Toros del Este by two games for the second spot. The top two teams at the end of the round robin get to play a best-of-seven series for the right to represent the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean Series.

The Gigantes del Cibao have won two LIDOM championships in 2015 and 2022. In 2022, they finished second in the Caribbean Series, losing to Colombia 4-1, who was represented by the Camines de Barranquilla of the Liga Profesional de Béisbol.

A bright spot for the Gigantes del Cibao has been Washington Nationals left-handed hitting second baseman Luis Garcia Jr. He hit a home run against the Leones del Escogido on Dec. 29 and has an OPS of .942 in 66 at-bats with the Gigantes del Cibao this winter. Garica Jr., 25, has played six seasons with the Nationals, and he has hit 34 home runs in his last two seasons combined.

He has 58 home runs, 269 RBIs, 49 stolen bases, and a slash line of .266/.299/.410 in 2,165 MLB at-bats.
