Dallas Keuchel, who won the 2015 American League Cy Young Award and five Gold Gloves in 13 Major League seasons, has agreed to a minor league contract with the Kansas City Royals.
Now 37, the deal was first reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan, who noted in a post on BlueSky that Keuchel was still hitting 92 mph on his fastball and would start at Triple-A Omaha in the Royals’ chain. Should he return to the majors, he’d make $2 million prorated for the remainder of the season.
The Tulsa, Okla.- native won the 2015 AL Cy Young after going 20-8 with a 2.32 ERA in 232 innings with 216 strikeouts for the Houston Astros. Keuchel pitched in Houston from 2012-18, and has since pitched for the Atlanta Braves, Chicago White Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks, Minnesota Twins, Milwaukee Brewers, and in Japan for Nippon Professional Baseball’s Chiba Lotte Marines. In his MLB career, he’s thrown 1642 1/3 innings with a 4.04 ERA, 1.326 WHIP and 1,254 strikeouts.
