Former Major League Baseball infielder Jonathan Schoop was arrested on gun charges in Curacao, an island in the southern Caribbean that is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Following a search of the 34-year-old infielder’s home as part of a wider investigation that snared nine people, Schoop was taken into custody on Jan. 31 according to a report from DeporteAwe.com.
Schoop, along with seven of the other eight people arrested, remains jailed in Curacao after a judge extended an order for his detention for eight days. He is to appear in court on Feb. 6.
Curacaoan authorities have released little information about the investigation, and it remains unclear what role, if any, Schoop has in the case.
Schoop played 10 seasons in Major League Baseball with the Baltimore Orioles, Milwaukee Brewers, Minnesota Twins, and Detroit Tigers. The 2017 All-Star played the last two summers with the Algodoneros de Union Laguna of the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol in Torreon, Mexico, and is a possible infielder for the Kingdom of the Netherlands roster for the 2026 World Baseball Classic, though his current situation likely will impact his availability.
