The Liga Mexicana de Béisbol’s Sultanes de Monterrey announced the signing of former Nippon Professional Baseball outfielder Louis Okoye on Wednesday.
Okoye was granted his release by the Yomiuri Giants in November to pursue opportunities overseas and now lands in Monterrey after spending the past three seasons in Tokyo. He joined the Giants via the 2022 Active Player Draft following a seven-year stint with the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles.
Also known as Rui, the Japanese-Nigerian hitter was once considered one of Rakuten’s top prospects after being selected in the first round of the 2015 NPB Draft. He represented Samurai Japan at the 2015 U-18 World Cup, and his sister, Monica Okoye, is an Olympic medalist with Japan’s women’s national basketball team.

However, Okoye never fully established himself at the top level, hampered by inconsistent production and periodic off-field behavioral issues. Over parts of nine NPB seasons, he posted a .230/.274/.341 slash line with 14 home runs, good for a 75 wRC+, across 1,069 plate appearances.
His minor league production has been far stronger, including a .344/.382/.547 line with seven extra-base hits in 26 games last year. Defensively, Okoye is an average to above-average option capable of handling all three outfield spots. Since 2023, he’s been worth 3 Defensive Runs Saved in center field.
The Sultanes, who finished first in the LMB’s North Division last season with a 50-32 record, will look to the 28-year-old to provide an extra spark to their offense.
