Women’s baseball reached a historic milestone as four outstanding European athletes were selected in the inaugural Women’s Professional Baseball League (WPBL) Draft. Mélissa Mayeux of France, Thaima Maximiliana of the Netherlands, Sarah Edwards of Italy, and Laura Hirai of Great Britain now stand among the world’s first women to join a fully professional baseball league—marking a breakthrough moment for the sport across Europe.
Mélissa Mayeux (France) – Round 5, Pick #19 to New York
French trailblazer Mélissa Mayeux continues her extraordinary legacy by becoming the first woman to play professional baseball, following her selection by New York with the 19th pick of Round 5. Mayeux’s career has been defined by barrier-breaking achievements, including:

After growing up in Curaçao Thaima entered the Dutch elite programs with a bang. Playing in both the bronze medal U18 team from the 2025 Women’s Softball European Championship and the Championship winning U22 team at the 2024 Women’s Softball European Championship, Thaima hits the draft hard, and we are sure she is going to be a force.

Sarah Edwards (Italy) – Round 3, Pick #10 to Los Angeles
Also joining Los Angeles is Sarah Edwards, chosen in Round 3 as the 10th pick. Known for her versatility, leadership, and on-field intelligence, Edwards adds depth and high-impact performance to the Los Angeles roster. Contributing as both a player and coach on the international stage, Sarah has already had an impressive career coaching baseball. From working with the Phillies organisation as a development hitting coach, to the Japan Winter League, she now highlights by her current coaching resume in Taiwan working with CTBC. Edwards says “I was training in Japan in the Winter League and the Manager of the CTBC Brothers noticed me. He liked my surgery and offered me a spot on his team. I think finding a job in baseball is a tough game given that it is a very competitive environment. In my case, however, I was open to every opportunity, always trying to be the best version of myself to be able to grab them.
We can’t wait to see what this new playing opportunity brings for Sarah and her team. Her drafting represents another significant step forward for European representation in the sport.

Laura Hirai (Great Britain) – Round 5, Pick #13 to Boston
British baseball celebrates a major achievement as Laura Hirai is selected by Boston with the 13th pick of Round 5. Hirai is widely respected for her discipline, steady performance, and competitive drive. Her drafting marks an inspiring milestone for women’s baseball in the United Kingdom, where the sport continues to grow rapidly. After growing up in Japan she fell in love with the sport as a child and eventually became the first – and only – female athlete to represent Great Britain in U18 baseball pitching at European Championships in 2015 and 2017. At the same time Laura also represented Great Britain in softball, becoming the programs first active player for both sports.
After a successful 2025 season contributing to both the Bronze Medal win at the Women’s European Softball Championship and Gold at the Women’s Baseball European Championship, also qualifying both squads for World Cup stages, Laura enters the new League with a winning record.
