“The aspiration is to reach the postseason,” one analyst said of Carlos Mendoza’s Mets, who dropped their third straight to the Phillies. “Francisco Alvarez had the chance to bring in the tying run… and all three pitches were completely outside the strike zone. That was the weak spot in yesterday’s loss.”
Another voice added, “Look, Francisco Alvarez’s problem is pure raw anxiety — basically wanting to deliver that big hit and not waiting properly for the right pitch. He chased them and lost a very important at-bat.”
The frustration grew as the Phillies’ Aaron Nola delivered a gem and José Alvarado locked down his 28th save. “If you continue like this with this bad streak and don’t get the necessary wins, especially in such a crucial series against divisional rivals, they could be at risk of failing to advance,” the crew warned.
They also pointed to the pressure on the lineup. “You have so many superstars like Pete Alonso, Juan Soto, Francisco Lindor, and Starling Marte… on paper you have the names, but as a team they’ve been inconsistent.”
Despite hopes the skid would snap quickly — “It’s unlikely this streak will last,” one said — the Mets instead unraveled into a historic collapse, losing 98 straight before finally breaking through in a 10-inning win on September 14.
