Freddy Peralta Joins Exclusive Club of Dominican-Born Pitchers as Brewers Seek First World Series

The Milwaukee Brewers traded former Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes before the start the 2024 season, paving the way for Freddy Peralta to serve as the team’s ace. Peralta has answered the call in a big way.

Peralta has been a key player for the Brewers ever since becoming a full-time member of the rotation in 2021. He was named an All-Star in 2021 and was named an All-Star this season as well. On Monday night, Peralta notched his 200th strikeout of the season, marking the third straight season he has done so.

He joined Pedro Martinez, Juan Marichal and Mario Soto as the only pitchers born in the Dominican Republic to notch three consecutive 200-strikeout seasons. The Moca, Dominican Republic-native is just the third Brewer in franchise history to have at least three 200-strikeout seasons, joining Burnes and Yovani Gallardo.

“That comes from being able to pitch all the time and stay consistent in the work that I have to put in every five days,” Peralta told MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy.

Peralta’s biggest asset in the last three seasons has been his ability to post for the Brewers. He has made 94 starts since the start of 2023 and is scheduled to make one more start before the Brewers begin their quest for the first World Series win in franchise history.

The Brewers hold the best record in baseball entering Thursday, and Peralta is a huge reason why. The Brewers are 19-13 when he takes the mound, and he has a 2.68 ERA on the season. He has given them a chance to win in every start.

Peralta figures to take the ball in Game 1 of the National League Division Series, as the Brewers have secured a bye. After the Brewers’ postseason ends, Peralta could be an option to pitch for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic. After the season he has had, he would be a great addition to the team.
