After a difficult outing Friday against the Seattle Mariners, the Chicago Cubs have parted ways with relief pitcher Genesis Cabrera. Cabrera will once again be looking for a team in 2025 after starting the season with the New York Mets.
From Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Cabrera is in his seventh year in the major leagues. A hard-throwing left-handed reliever, Cabrera pitched 9 1/3 innings for the Cubs out of the bullpen this season. Unfortunately for Cabrera and team management, the signing did not work out. Cabrera’s ERA with the Cubs was 8.68. He gave up three runs on four hits in one inning of work yesterday against the Mariners.
That appears to be the final straw for Cubs management, as Cabrera now finds himself designated for assignment for the second time this season. Cabrera started the season with the Mets and was designated for assignment by them on May 24. Cabrera was more successful with the Mets, posting a 3.52 ERA, but he did not have a secure spot in the bullpen.
Genesis Cabrera made his MLB debut with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2019 and showed promise with his high-90s fastball. Cabrera spent five years in St. Louis as a bullpen piece before being traded to the Toronto Blue Jays on July 21, 2023.
In Toronto, Cabrera enjoyed a productive second half of 2023 and a good 2024. Unfortunately, he has yet to replicate that success in 2025. With his stuff, a signing could be on the horizon for Cabrera if he clears waivers.
