Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets infielder Kent Schmidt is returning to college baseball to play his senior season. The Marietta, Ga.-native decided to forgo the 2026 MLB Draft and return to play for the Yellow Jackets in Atlanta.
Schmidt in 2026 with Georgia Tech, big-time season for the Yellow Jackets
Schmidt was one of many great hitters on an elite Georgia Tech offense in 2026. In his junior season, he had a .305 batting average with a .901 OPS. Schmidt also had an on-base percentage of .463, seven home runs, and 50 RBIs.
One of his best games of the 2026 college baseball season came on May 3 against the Xavier Musketeers at Russ Chandler Stadium in Atlanta. During that game, he had four hits and scored two runs in a 14-6 win for the Yellow Jackets.
Schmidt helped Georgia Tech to a 50-11 overall record and a 26-5 record in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) games. For the second straight season, Georgia Tech won the ACC regular season title.
The Yellow Jackets also won their first ACC Tournament title since 2014. During the 2026 ACC Tournament at Truist Field in Charlotte, Schmidt had a three-hit game against the Virginia Cavaliers on May 21. He had a home run in that game and three RBIs as well.
After winning ACC titles, Georgia Tech hosted a regional at Russ Chandler Stadium in the NCAA Tournament. The Oklahoma Sooners defeated them in the regional final and went on to win the 2026 national championship.

Before the 2026 season, Schmidt also played for Georgia Tech in 2025. He transferred to the Yellow Jackets after playing for Georgia Southern in 2024, which was his freshman season.
In 2025, Schmidt had a .397 batting average, which was the best on the Georgia Tech team. It was also the best batting average for a Yellow Jackets player since 2022.
It is important to note that Schmidt also missed 20 games that season due to an injury.
