The Guardians took the first game of their series in New York against a fellow division leader in what was the longest game of the season. Here’s everything you missed from yesterday in the MLB.
Guardians 9, Yankees 5
The Guardians ended their three-game losing streak by winning game one of a series between AL division leaders. Juan Soto and Aaron Judge hit back-to-back homers in the first inning to give New York a quick lead. The Guardians tied the game in the third with a Daniel Schneeman single. After the fourth inning, both teams did not score until the 12th, where Cleveland scored 6, capped off by a Jhonkensy Noel infield single.
Diamondbacks 3, Marlins 1
Arizona finished with four hits but bested the Marlins for the second straight day and clinched a series victory. Corbin Carroll homered in the fifth inning to maintain the Diamondbacks lead. Lourdes Gurriel added a home run of his own in the next inning to give the club an insurance run.
Rockies 3, Nationals 1
Austin Gomber allowed one run on three hits and picked up the win after seven innings of work for Colorado. The Rockies scored two runs in the sixth, which was capped off by Brendan Rodgers scoring on an error to grow their lead and finish on top.
Blue Jays 10, Reds 3
George Springer hit two of the Blue Jays season-high five homers to help Toronto pick up the win. Kirk, Horwitz, and Jimenez each hit a home run, and the Blue Jays scored all ten runs in five innings on Reds starter Carson Spiers. Jose Berrios struck out seven hitters and allowed two runs in seven innings.
Orioles 9, Mets 5
Anthony Santander hit a two-run homer in the first, and James McCann drove in three runs, including a two-run home run of his own, to help the Orioles regain the AL East lead. Dean Kremer allowed one run in six innings and struck out seven hitters. The Mets are two and a half games out of an NL wild-card spot.
The Braves won their third straight game and took the first game of the series against the division-leading Phillies. Marcell Ozuna homered in the sixth inning to break the tie for Atlanta. Gio Urshela walked with the bases loaded in the eighth in his Braves debut to provide an insurance run and pull the Braves to six games back of Philadelphia.
Milwaukee won their sixth straight after a scoreless performance from Frankie Montas in seven innings. William Contreras hit an RBI double in the eighth inning, providing the Brewers with the one-run advantage needed to come out on top. The Cardinals have lost seven of eight and are six games back of a wild card spot.
Pirates 4, Rangers 0
Mitch Keller allowed the only three Rangers hits in seven innings and struck out nine to lead the Pirates to the win. Bryan De La Cruz had a two-RBI single and scored in the fourth inning to give Pittsburgh a lead they did not surrender.
Cubs 3, Tigers 1
Cody Bellinger drove in two runs and gave the Cubs the lead with a double in the fifth inning. Dansby Swanson hit a solo homer an inning later and helped lead Chicago to their third win over their last four. The Cubs are five and a half games out of NL wild card position.
Red Sox 6, Astros 5
Jarren Duran went 4-for-4 and hit the game-winning home run in the eighth to help the Red Sox win game two of the series in Houston. Both teams went back and forth before Duran, who hit safely in 26 of his last 30 games, gave the Sox the lead. Boston is three and a half back of the Royals for the third wild-card spot in the AL.
Angels 9, Royals 5
The Angels ended Kansas City’s five-game win streak thanks to a three-run sixth inning that gave the Halos the lead. Zachary Neto gave the Angels the lead with a solo homer in the sixth, but Los Angeles would not hand over the lead. The Royals remained tied for second place in the AL Central with the Twins.
Rays 1, A’s 0
Shane Baz allowed three hits and collected four strikeouts in seven and two-thirds to pick up his first win in over two years. Jose Siri broke up the scoreless pitchers duel with a solo homer with two outs in the eighth inning to give the Rays their fourth win in the last five.
Heliot Ramos had two RBIs, including the go-ahead walk with the bases loaded in the third inning to help the Giants hand Chicago their fourth straight loss and 14th straight series loss. Robbie Ray allowed one run and had nine strikeouts in six and two-thirds for his third win of the season. San Francisco is three and a half games behind the Braves for the third wild card spot in the NL.
Padres 7, Twins 5
Manny Machado hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning to tie the game before Jurickson Profar hit a three-run shot that gave San Diego the lead and pushed the Twins losing streak to three straight. Xander Bogaerts doubled home a run a few batters later to give the Padres a cushion.
The Dodgers pinch-hit Jason Heyward in the eighth inning, who broke the tie and drove in the winning runs with a three-run home run. Los Angeles secured the series win and gave the Mariners their seventh loss in the last eight. Seattle is five games behind the Astros for the AL West lead.
