How Each SEC Opening Day Pitcher Played During the 2026 Shriners Children’s College Showdown

Three headlining Southeastern Conference (SEC) pitchers got to start during opening day of college baseball at the 2026 Shriners Children’s College Showdown.

Oklahoma’s Cam Johnson, Vanderbilt’s Connor Fennell, and Arkansas’ Gabe Gaeckle all had big shoes to fill. Those three teams lost key starters from last season and needed to replace them.

Here is how the three SEC starting pitchers played during day one action at Globe Life Field.

Cam Johnson strikes out 11 Texas Tech hitters in Oklahoma’s win

Cam Johnson started on opening day for the Oklahoma Sooners against the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

He had a great 2026 debut. The southpaw struck out 11 Texas Tech hitters in six innings of work. Over that same stretch, he allowed just three hits and one unearned run.

Johnson’s performance was key in keeping the Red Raiders within striking distance. Oklahoma took advantage of his stellar pitching and scored 10 runs in the final five innings to win the game.

Going forward, Johnson being the Friday starter for the Sooners will be huge. Oklahoma needs to replace first-team All-American Kyson Witherspoon, who was drafted in the first round of the 2025 MLB Draft. Johnson can be the pitcher to accomplish this.

Connor Fennell Reaches Seven Strikeouts Against the TCU Horned Frogs

Connor Fennell was Vanderbilt’s opening day starter in Arlington. In 5 1/3 innings against the TCU Horned Frogs, he had seven strikeouts and allowed just two hits and two earned runs.

Fennell also did a good job of keeping his pitches in the strike zone as he walked only one TCU hitter during his start.

The right-handed junior can be a great pitcher to fill into the Friday starter role for the Commodores. Vanderbilt lost J.D. Thompson from last season’s team. He was a stellar pitcher who was selected in the second round of the 2025 MLB Draft.

Gabe Gaeckle strikes out nine Oklahoma State Hitters for Arkansas

Gabe Gaeckle was the opening day starter for the Arkansas Razorbacks against the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

In 4 1/3 innings, he had nine strikeouts and allowed just one earned run. Gaeckle also walked only one Oklahoma State hitter during his time on the mound.

The right-hander’s start was key in helping the Razorbacks get a 12-2 run-rule win on Friday against the Cowboys.

Arkansas no longer has Zach Root, who was their Friday starter last season. Gaeckle can be a great pitcher to help fill that spot.
