The New York Mets have confirmed they are in on the 2024 season, acquiring right-hand relief pitcher Huascar Brazobán from the division rival Miami Marlins for young infielder Wilfredo Lara.
The 34-year-old righty will strengthen a Mets bullpen that has struggled.
Brazobán signed as an international free agent with the Colorado Rockies in 2011. He would not make his Major League debut until 2022. Since then, he has been very good out of the Miami bullpen. In 30 2/3 innings pitched this season, Brazobán owns a 2.93 ERA and averages 10 strikeouts per nine innings. He generally causes a lot of hitters to chase, whiff, and generate weak contact, with a cutter and changeup combo being his primary pitch focus.
He joins a Met bullpen that has struggled mightily outside of Reed Garrett and Edwin Diaz, who have both been up and down. Brazobán joins recent Met additions Phil Maton and Paul Blackburn as boosts to the pitching staff in Queens.
Lara, the Mets’ number 22 prospect, is 20 years old and from Bani, Dominican Republic. He spent this season for the Mets’ high-A affiliate, the Brooklyn Cyclones. He is listed as a shortstop but also has experience at third base and in the outfield. Due to his combination of power and speed, Lara has been a constant riser in the Mets organization.
