They call him “the Martian” because of his out-of-this-world skillset, but Jasson Dominguez’ hometown of Esperanza in the northern Dominican Republic is, in fact, on terra firma.
Now in his third season with the Yankees but the first where he’s an every-day player, Dominguez, now the regular left fielder in the Bronx, put together the kind of week that Yankees fans have been longing to see out of the highly-touted youngster. In six games, Dominguez went 11-for-26 with two homers, four RBIs, and five runs scored — possibly the only bright spot for the Yankees, who went 1-6 in seven games last week. For his effort, Dominguez is World Baseball Network’s International MLB Player of the Week.
The highlight of the week was a 2-for-4 day against the cross-town rival Mets on July 4, a game where Dominguez, batting first in the Yankees’ order, led off with a homer and added another one later, driving in three runs and scoring two, though the Yankees ultimately coughed up the lead and the game, losing 6-5.
Dominguez has appeared in 75 of the Yankees’ 90 games thus far this season, and is batting .267/.345/.426 with a .771 OPS, eight homers and 33 RBIs.
While those numbers are modest, perhaps his breakout week with the team in a slump signals good things to come.
The Yankees host the Seattle Mariners Tuesday through Thursday and the Chicago Cubs for three games next weekend. The game on Thursday, July 10, a 7:05 p.m. EDT start against the Seattle Mariners, will be televised on MLB Network, and the games on Saturday and Sunday, both afternoon starts, will be televised on MLB Network.
